ESL announces major CS2 tournament changes for 2027
Tournament operator ESL has unveiled major updates to the ESL Pro Tour format for 2027, bringing significant changes to the structure, calendar, and financial system of the Counter-Strike 2 scene.
The headline update is an increase in the total prize pool — more than $11.45 million will be distributed across ESL events in 2027, with the potential to reach $12.45 million when including the ESL Grand Slam.
One of the key format changes is the expansion of the playoffs. From 2027 onward, 8 teams will compete in the playoff stage at every event, impacting both the group stage structure and prize distribution.
ESL is also moving away from studio finals — all tournaments will conclude on a live stage with an audience, enhancing the overall viewing experience.
In addition, ESL plans to expand its global reach, with at least three new host cities across three continents set to join the circuit by the end of 2027.

Another major addition is the introduction of Wildcard invites for championship events (IEM Kraków and IEM Cologne). These invites will allow newly formed or heavily reworked teams to participate even if they have not qualified through the ranking system.
Furthermore, ESL will optimize the ESL Pro League schedule, shortening event durations and reducing the overall calendar footprint by 14 days across the year.
The club incentive system will also be adjusted, with playoff viewership now included in the calculation instead of only group stage data.
The first event to adopt the new format will be IEM Kraków 2027, which will open the ESL Pro Tour season.
