ESL is rumored to be funding most of ESIC's work

Tomi Kovanen, who is the co-founder and co-managing director of the esports organizations ENCE and Immortals, respectively, returned to the conversation about the work of ESIC. On his Twitter, the 34-year-old Finnish functionary made several arguments, as a result of which he came to the conclusion that the tournament operator ESL finances most of the work of ESIC.

Relationships that may or may not matter:

  • The FalleN store sells merchandise for ESL and many EPL member teams in Brazil.
  • peacemaker is the head coach of the FalleN team.
  • The FalleN team will play in the ESL championship next week.
  • ESL is rumored to be funding most of ESIC.

Probably nothing, but transparency would help sort this out.

Recall that this is not the first attack by Kovanen against ESIC. The day before, the Finn demanded that the Commission be more specific in its work, accusing the body of hiding key facts.

The co-founder of ENCE did not end there. Based on the above arguments, he demanded financial statements for 2019, 2020 and 2021 from ESIC. Kovanen connected his request with the available financial documents of the Commission, which, in his opinion, do not correspond to reality.

Before anyone points out that ESIC is under-resourced (which they have, as can be seen from company documents), let's ask two questions:

  • Who is actually funding the day to day operations?
  • Why is a regulator with an average income of less than $20,000 in cash in 2017-2020 responsible for esports?

Also, the functionary did not do without mentioning the work of ESIC itself, which, in his opinion, approaches the issue too selectively.

Trainer FURIA got banned for 4 months after it was apparently proven that he didn't exploit the bug, but peacemaker got away with 22 days. Why? Where are the specific reasons? Guerri's sentence was also commuted due to a confession, presumably after the investigation began.

It's entirely possible that ESIC is doing its best to actually be a neutral regulator, but their actions make it impossible to believe this. Each decision seems completely arbitrary, probably because they are so afraid of passing painful judgments on popular coaches.

Recall that the talk about the opacity and bias of ESIC arose after the peacemaker announced the lifting of his ban on participation in competitions. According to the published information, the Brazilian specialist challenged the preliminary ESIC decision on the bath with the help of his lawyer. After consideration of the appeal, the head of the Commission, Ian Smith, accepted the evidence of innocence and terminated the proceedings, thereby removing all charges and sanctions from the specialist.
