ruggah retires from coaching, ending decade-long Counter-Strike career

Casper "ruggah" Due has announced his retirement from professional coaching. The 37-year-old Dane, who most recently led Astralis before parting ways with the organization in June, has decided not to pursue another head coach role in Counter-Strike.

A former CS:Source player, Due transitioned into coaching in 2016 and spent the better part of a decade behind five different rosters: Dignitas, North, OpTic, OG, and Astralis. Over that stretch he claimed two big LAN titles — DreamHack Open Montreal 2017 with North and DreamHack Open Summer 2019 with OpTic — and steered his teams to a total of eight Major appearances, including a run to the semi-finals of BLAST Premier World Final in both 2022 (with OG) and 2024 (with Astralis).

His final chapter came with Astralis, where he took over in early 2024 and helped the org rebuild around an international lineup after decades of an all-Danish roster policy. The results were mixed but at times promising, including a runner-up finish at PGL Bucharest 2026 and a third-place showing at PGL Astana 2025. Ultimately, though, Astralis parted ways with him after the team failed to advance past Stage 2 of the IEM Cologne Major 2026.

What comes next for Due remains uncertain. Before he ever picked up a coaching headset, he spent 2013 to 2016 working as a teacher in Denmark, covering math, esports, science, and English. With two children at home, a return to the classroom — or at least a quieter life — doesn't seem out of the question.

Announcing his decision, ruggah reflected on the toll of life on the road:

"It's been a truly amazing journey. But after more than 120 days on the road every year, countless hours in airports, gyms, and arenas, and plenty of high-pressure stretches, I've reached a point where I want to try a different way of everyday life.

I don't know what the future holds for me, other than a less hectic schedule and more time to talk about the things that matter over a cup of coffee, without having to rush to catch a flight afterward."

With ruggah stepping away, one of the most recognizable coaching figures in Counter-Strike history closes out a career that spanned CS:GO's rise and its transition into CS2.
