Unlocking the Future: Why a Call of Duty and Overwatch 2 Crossover Is the Ultimate Gaming Fantasy

As is now a cherished tradition, Call of Duty is fully embracing the spooky season with its annual event, The Haunting. While this Halloween extravaganza typically brings forth limited-time game modes and eerie map transformations for both the main Call of Duty game and Warzone, the real stars of The Haunting are undeniably the cosmetics. Over the years, players have been treated to memorable appearances ranging from Donnie Darko to Ghostface from the Scream franchise. And this year's offerings are no different. However, amidst all the excitement surrounding the Diablo crossover, it's worth pondering what might come next in this trend.

In an unexpected turn, The Haunting is set to feature not just Spawn and Ash Williams from the Evil Dead series but also the intriguing additions of Lilith and Inarius from the upcoming Diablo 4. Given that Activision Blizzard is a colossal entity, it's somewhat surprising that such a crossover took this long to materialize. While fans might have anticipated Diablo-themed weapon blueprints, the reality goes beyond, with angelic and demonic characters becoming Operators in the world of Call of Duty. While this opens the door for potential Diablo characters in future Haunting events, it also hints that other Blizzard franchises could follow suit. Above all else, a potential Call of Duty and Overwatch 2 crossover seems like an incredibly logical step.

Unlocking the Future: Why a Call of Duty and Overwatch 2 Crossover Is the Ultimate Gaming Fantasy 1

Although Overwatch 2 boasts a distinctive hero shooter format and vibrant aesthetics, it shares the fundamental DNA of being an FPS with Call of Duty. Moreover, when it comes to crossovers, it's often best not to overanalyze what fits naturally into each game. Case in point, the connection between Overwatch 2 and One-Punch Man was tenuous at best, proving that imagination knows no bounds in this realm. Furthermore, as both franchises fall under the umbrella of Activision Blizzard, a collaboration would translate into pure profit for the company, without the need to share revenue as in licensed crossovers.

The primary allure of any Call of Duty collaboration undoubtedly lies in the Operator skins. Whether it's a cultural icon like Snoop Dogg, Lara Croft or Homelander from The Boys, the characters themselves take center stage in these bundles. Fortunately, Overwatch 2 is a treasure trove of characters, and many of them wield firearms, making them seamless additions to the Call of Duty universe. Iconic figures like Tracer and Soldier: 76 would blend seamlessly, while grounded heroes like Cassidy, Ashe, Baptiste and Mercy could also make the transition smoothly, providing months of exciting Operator bundle possibilities.

Yet, the consideration shouldn't stop at Operator skins; other cosmetics are equally conceivable. Overwatch 2's profile icons and name cards, essentially rebranded titles and emblems, could be seamlessly integrated into Call of Duty or reimagined with a realistic touch. Weapon charms, such as a miniature Pachimari or Sojourn's dog Murphy, could add a delightful touch, along with a basic Overwatch logo. Most excitingly, weapon blueprints offer endless possibilities, from recreating Tracer's Pulse pistols to Ashe's Viper rifle.

However, a Call of Duty and Overwatch crossover could be a two-way street. Just as it's easy to envision Operators donning the appearance of Overwatch 2 heroes, it's equally intriguing to imagine Blizzard's champions cosplaying as iconic Call of Duty characters. The likes of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's Ghost could effortlessly become Reaper, while Captain Price's transformation into Soldier: 76 would make perfect sense, especially if his visor takes on a night vision goggles twist. Zarya could embrace the persona of Call of Duty Zombies' Nikolai, and Mercy would be an ideal fit for Samantha Maxis.

While there's no concrete evidence to suggest that a Call of Duty and Overwatch 2 collaboration is in the works, the inclusion of Diablo 4 content in Call of Duty certainly raises the possibility. For fans of either franchise, the prospect of fresh interpretations of beloved characters, whether they be cartoony Call of Duty regulars or realistic Overwatch heroes, is tantalizing. With the potential for diverse cosmetics beyond just skins, this potential collaboration appears to be a match made in gaming heaven.
