Sony Increases the Price of the Base PlayStation 5 in Several Regions

On April 14, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced a price increase for the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition across multiple countries. The news was confirmed by Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President of International Marketing at Sony, who stated that the company was forced to make this “difficult decision” due to the challenging global economic situation.

The price hike has already come into effect and affects Europe, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, as well as countries in Africa and the Middle East. Meanwhile, the price of the standard PS5 model with a disc drive remains unchanged in most regions.

Updated Prices:

  • Europe:— PS5 Digital Edition: €499 (previously €449).— PS5 with disc drive: unchanged.
  • United Kingdom:— PS5 Digital Edition: £429 (previously £389).— PS5 with disc drive: unchanged.
  • Australia:— PS5 Digital Edition: AUD 749 (previously AUD 649).— PS5 with disc drive: AUD 829 (previously AUD 799).
  • New Zealand:— PS5 Digital Edition: NZD 859 (previously NZD 799).— PS5 with disc drive: NZD 949 (previously NZD 899).

For Africa and the Middle East, Sony has not provided specific updated prices, advising customers to check with local retailers for the latest information.

It’s worth noting that this is not the first time Sony has adjusted PlayStation 5 prices. Back in 2022, the company raised the console’s cost in various regions. For example, when the PS5 Digital Edition first launched in Europe, it was priced at €399. The new price of €499 marks a €100 increase since its release.

A Small Silver Lining: Detachable Disc Drive Gets a Price Cut

Alongside the console price adjustment, Sony has lowered the price of the detachable disc drive for the PS5:

  • Europe: €79 (previously €99).
  • United Kingdom: £69 (previously £99).
  • Australia: AUD 124 (previously AUD 149).
  • New Zealand: NZD 139 (previously NZD 169).

The recently launched PS5 Pro is not affected by these changes. As for potential price adjustments in the U.S., Sony has yet to comment, and future shifts will likely depend on the introduction of new tariffs.
