The collaboration arrives at a time when the hero shooter is experiencing a major resurgence. Earlier this year, Blizzard Entertainment announced a sweeping overhaul of the game, effectively rebranding Overwatch 2 back to its original Overwatch identity while introducing significant gameplay and structural updates.

Overwatch’s Recent Revival

The rebrand marked the start of a new era for the franchise. Season 1 introduced five brand-new heroes, with another five characters scheduled to arrive throughout 2026. Alongside these additions, Blizzard increased its focus on the game’s overarching narrative while implementing long-requested gameplay improvements.

These changes have helped drive a noticeable increase in player activity across all platforms. The launch of Season 1 also brought a steady stream of content updates and events, including the Talon vs Overwatch community event and a major mid-season update.

Now, the spotlight shifts to the NieR: Automata crossover, which will run for a limited time.

Overwatch x Project YoRHa Event Details

The Overwatch x Project YoRHa collaboration began on March 10 and will run until March 23, giving players two weeks to explore the themed content.

The highlight of the event is a lineup of five premium skins inspired by characters from the Square Enix franchise. These cosmetics transform several Overwatch heroes into iconic figures from the YoRHa universe.

The premium skins include:

  • Kiriko as 2B (with Pod 042)
  • Wuyang as 9S (with Pod 153)
  • Vendetta as A2
  • Mercy as Commander White
  • Lifeweaver as Adam

Some fans had already caught a glimpse of the skins earlier after they leaked online, but the official release finally showcases the full collection in detail.

Event Hub, Challenges, and Rewards

In addition to the skins, the crossover introduces a themed lobby environment designed with contributions from Kimihiko Fujisaka and Koda Kazuma, both artists who previously worked on NieR: Automata.

The event hub features a variety of challenges that allow players to earn extra rewards. Completing these tasks unlocks cosmetic items and personalization options, including name cards, player titles, and other themed collectibles.

Players can also earn a special weapon charm inspired by NieR: Automata, giving them another way to showcase the collaboration during matches.

Overwatch’s Growing List of Crossovers

In recent years, Overwatch has leaned heavily into collaboration events with popular franchises. Blizzard has partnered with a wide range of brands and series, introducing themed skins and cosmetics tied to major pop culture properties.

Previous collaborations have included:

  • Avatar: The Last Airbender
  • Cowboy Bebop
  • My Hero Academia
  • Hello Kitty
  • Transformers

Blizzard has also drawn from its own catalog, introducing skins based on iconic characters from World of Warcraft, StarCraft, and Diablo, including appearances inspired by figures such as the Lich King and Lilith.

These crossover events have proven both popular and profitable, making them a central part of Overwatch’s evolving live-service strategy.

NieR: Automata’s Long Crossover History

The partnership with NieR: Automata is far from the franchise’s first appearance in another game. Developed by Square Enix, the title remains hugely influential nearly a decade after its original release.

Despite approaching its 10-year anniversary in 2027, the game’s characters continue to appear across multiple titles and collaborations. The protagonist 2B has previously joined the roster of Soulcalibur VI and Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising as a playable fighter.

Other crossover events have brought NieR-themed content to games such as Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege, Naraka: Bladepoint, Stellar Blade, and Final Fantasy XIV.

Even the battle royale PUBG: Battlegrounds has hosted a NieR-themed event in the past, demonstrating the franchise’s lasting popularity across the gaming industry.
