Why Was Clash Removed?

  • Clash has been one of the most divisive game modes in Overwatch 2.
  • Many players found it frustrating, with some calling it a “nightmare” to play.
  • Due to ongoing issues, Clash was removed from Competitive play and the Overwatch Championship Series.

Blizzard’s Plan to Fix Clash

  • In an AMA on the/r/CompetitiveOverwatch subreddit, Lead Hero Designer Alec Dawson revealed that the team believes the map design is the root of most issues, not the scoring system.
  • Key problems stem from Points A and E, which resemble 2CP’s final points, giving defenders an unfair advantage due to spawn proximity.

New Map in Development

  • Blizzard is now building an entirely new Clash map from the ground up with a redesigned layout to fix the core gameplay issues.
  • The rework will include both scoring adjustments and major geometric changes to improve competitive balance.

“We actually spent a good amount of time on Clash’s scoring before we made the decision to pull it from Competitive,” Dawson said. “Even with scoring changes, we believed the mode needed some fundamental geo changes to points A+E to perform better as a Competitive mode.”

What About Existing Maps?

  • Hanaoka and Throne of Anubis will likely undergo fundamental reworks to align with the new Clash format.
  • There is no confirmed timeline for Clash’s return to Competitive, but the mode remains available in Quick Play and Custom Games.

What’s Next for Overwatch 2?

  • While Clash undergoes changes, players can look forward to Stadium, a new Competitive format set to launch in Season 16.

Blizzard’s commitment to reworking Clash suggests that the dev team is determined to make the mode a success, ensuring a more balanced and enjoyable experience for all players.
