League of Legends Leak Suggests Major Control Overhaul with WASD Movement

League of Legends might soon be getting one of its most significant control updates in years. According to a recent datamine, Riot Games is testing a new movement system that would allow players to control their champions using the WASD keys — a drastic shift from the traditional mouse-click navigation the game has relied on for over 15 years.

What’s Changing?

Leaked screenshots show that players will be able to customize their control setup, choosing between the classic point-and-click style or two new movement options:

  • WASD with Enhanced Cursor – likely improving the cursor’s responsiveness alongside directional input.
  • WASD with Cursor Offset – possibly offering more spatial awareness by adjusting the cursor based on movement direction.

In addition, Riot seems to be testing a “smart cast” mode, where abilities automatically target enemies in the direction the champion is facing — streamlining gameplay for faster reactions and combos.

The Community Reacts: Excitement Meets Skepticism

The leak has stirred mixed reactions within the League community. On one side, some players are welcoming the change, saying it could make champion movement feel more intuitive, especially for newcomers used to WASD in other games.

On the flip side, competitive and long-time players fear it might complicate the pro scene, disrupt established mechanics, and offer little actual value in high-skill matches.

Some professional players have already spoken out, expressing concern that this control scheme doesn’t align with the precision needed at top levels of play.

Riot Remains Silent

So far, Riot Games has not commented publicly on the leak or confirmed whether this feature will make it into a live build. Whether this is a temporary experiment or the early phase of a broader rework remains to be seen.

This could mark a turning point in how players experience League of Legends — or it might just be another test that never makes it out of development. Time will tell.
