Riot Games has rolled out patch 25.09, the most impactful update for League of Legends in 2025 so far. With the seasonal focus shifting from Noxus to Ionia, this patch introduces sweeping changes across map objectives, core systems, itemization, and more.
While not quite at the scale of a preseason overhaul, this update fundamentally reshapes the game's rhythm—from laning dynamics to macro-level strategy—potentially changing how League is played at all skill tiers.

Lane Swap Detection
- Still requires a jungler present on each team.
- Detection remains active from:1:30–3:00 (Top Lane)
- 1:30–2:15 (Mid Lane)
- Defending champions:Gain full XP and gold
- Take 50% reduced damage under tower
- Tower takes 95% reduced damage when two non-junglers are in lane
- Non-supports now receive full gold/XP during swap detection.
- Supports in solo lanes (with another champ):Receive no XP/gold from lane minions
- Can’t use World Atlas charges
- Turret damage x10 rule for swap abuse now only applies if both non-junglers, including a support, are seen top.
Void Grubs
- Spawn time delayed to 8 minutes (was 6)
- Only one spawn per game
- Max stacks reduced from 6 → 3
- Spawns a mini grub at 3 stacks
- Objective true damage lowered: 3–18 → 3–12 (halved for ranged champs)
Rift Herald
- Spawns earlier at 15 minutes (was 16)
- Loses damage reduction against most recent attacker
- Bonus HP damage increased: 4% → 20%
- Swipe scaling: 300% AD → 125% AD
- Base turret charge damage up, but scales down per hit
- Improved driving responsiveness and fallback charge logic
🌹 Atakhan Update
- Now has a single form: Thornbound (Voracious and Ruinous forms removed)
- Base AD: 75 → 100
- Ring base damage: 11.5–207 → 10–180
- Ring health damage: 9% → 8% current HP
- Killing Atakhan:Collects all roses
- Grants +25% rose XP and adaptive force permanently
- Rose XP reduced: 23 → 20
💰 Champion Bounties & Items
- Kill Bounty Gold scales with level:300 → 300–420 (Lv 6–18)
- Jungle Items:Can no longer be sold
- Lock out non-consumables until initial jungle item is acquired
- Support Items:Can only be purchased by supports

Ignite
- Damage increased: 70–410 → 70–475
⚖️ Champion Balance Changes
Annie
- Q: Base damage up
- W: Mana cost down
- R: Magic Pen increased
Ashe
- Q: Increased attack speed and max AD scaling
Gwen
- Armor per level down
- Passive and Q damage to monsters reduced
Kalista
- Base health and AD nerfed
- E: Slight base damage reduction
K’Sante
- W: Base damage buffed
Leona
- Passive: Sunlight duration up
- Q: Mana cost down
- E: Mana cost normalized
Morgana
- E: Shield value buffed
- R: Base damage and movement speed increased
Naafiri
- W: Higher CD early
- E: Lower AD scaling
Orianna
- Q: Mana cost normalized to 35
Rengar
- Shop recommendations updated
Shen
- Q: Max health damage buffed and empowered values increased
Yorick
- Passive: Ghoul damage to monsters increased
👢 Item Updates
Boots
- All Tier 3 boots upgrade cost: 750 → 500
- Spellslinger’s Shoes: Magic pen down 8% → 7%
- Forever Forward: MS scaling reduced
- Swiftmarch:Passive MS→Adaptive Force increased
- Flat MS reduced: 70 → 65
- No longer grants bonus movement speed
- Boots of Swiftness: MS reduced: 60 → 55
- Symbiotic Soles:No longer grants empowered recall
- Now provides +10 OOC movement speed
Rod of Ages
- HP reduced: 400 → 350
- AP reduced: 50 → 45
🧬 Rune Changes
Biscuit of Everlasting Will
- Now heals: 20 + up to 100% (based on missing HP) + 2% max HP
Unflinching
- Resistances: 6–12 → 10
🚫 Behavior Systems
- Chat restrictions now apply in champ select and post-game.
- Improved griefing detection for subtle forms of match-throwing like soft inting or excessive splitting.
Patch 25.09 signals a bold mid-season refresh, especially for players looking to re-engage with traditional laning and macro strategies. With major system shifts and objective tuning, the League landscape just got a lot more tactical.
