5 League of Legends Items That Were Removed from the Game

1. Sightstone

If you didn't play League of Legends during its early seasons, you might not be familiar with Sightstone. It was a support-exclusive item that allowed players to place wards, similar to the current support items. While it may not have seemed overpowered at first, Sightstone became a common pick for junglers as well, ushering in an era of vision control and slower gameplay that persisted for years. Riot Games removed Sightstone at the beginning of Season 8 and introduced the current vision item system.

2. Zz'Rot Portal

Zz'Rot Portal made its debut at the start of Season 5 and was designed as an item for tanks. It provided armor and magic resistance, along with an active effect that created a portal spawning voidlings to damage towers and inhibitors over time. In essence, it was a split-pushing item for tanks, but it turned out to be frustrating to play against and unfun for opponents. Some champions, like Sion, could abuse it to rapidly push lanes and teleport while the item did the pushing for them. Consequently, Zz'Rot Portal was removed in Season 9.

3. Banner of Command

This item was often paired with Zz'Rot Portal. Banner of Command was essentially the precursor to Hullbreaker: its active effect empowered a minion, granting it increased power and reduced damage. When combined with Zz'Rot Portal, players could use it on a cannon minion, causing the lane to automatically push towards the enemy side. This forced the enemy team to respond, giving you a numerical advantage in fights. It was such an unusual item to balance that Riot decided to remove it in Season 8.

Fortunately, Hullbreaker now requires a player to be present in the lane, which has allowed Riot to balance it more effectively.

4. Deathfire Grasp

Deathfire Grasp was perhaps the most beloved item among those who built it. It not only offered powerful stats for mages but also amplified all the damage dealt to the target, making it the ultimate choice for quick burst damage champions and AP assassins. However, it was so potent that it was deemed non-interactive for opponents, leading to its removal from Summoner's Rift in Season 5. It briefly returned in Nexus Blitz but was officially removed again in Season 10.

5. Ohmwrecker

Ohmwrecker was an intriguing item that sadly met its end in Season 9. While it didn't provide exceptional stats, its active effect allowed players to disable turrets temporarily, making it ideal for setting up dives and punishing enemies.

The issue with Ohmwrecker was that it became incredibly challenging to balance and wasn't particularly useful or popular unless it fit specific team compositions. As a result, Riot chose to remove it from the game. These are some of the noteworthy League of Legends items that were removed from the game. Did we miss any?
