The Elder Scrolls: Legends is Turning out to be Much Different than Hearthstone than we Thought
If you've seen anything of competitive card games, you will know that Blizzard Entertainment controls that market with an iron fist. Since Hearthstone’s launch in 2014, it has broken several world records for not just card games, but eSports in general, for which the community and players have showed overwhelming support for. The community Hearthstone has built is truly incredible. Just about wherever you live, there is probably a Fireside Gathering a half hour away within the next week. The community for it is huge, which means that at first, we may have shoved aside The Elder Scrolls: Legends as just another wannabe virtual card game that would fall into one of the least watched games on twitch.tv as, unfortunately, many others have.
However, now that more information has been released about the game, it would seem to be more than just a copy + paste of Hearthstone. In fact, it actually seems to be much different. Let’s go into some of the details here.
Similarities
For starters, let’s look at the similar parts of the game. Your hero still has 30 life, and the board looks remarkably similar. The mana system, although called another name now, looks to be the exact same way it is used, progressed and expended throughout the game.
New Features
While there are similarities, there are also some interesting and fun features that The Elder Scrolls: Legends includes. Similar and yet not similar to many popular MOBA games like League of Legends and DotA2 (both of which are covered with exclusive content right here at egamersworld.com), this game has a lane feature. There are two lanes per board in this game, much like a game that many have compared to Hearthstone already: Clash Royale. I know, I know. I can hear your irritated groans and grunts now. “It’s just an app – not a real game!” I get it, while it’s not exactly popular in the Hearthstone community, it is an admittedly strong eSports contender. Like Elder Scrolls: Legends, it features two lanes.
What does this mean? Well, for starters it adds a huge risk factor when attempting to play aggressively. Sure, you can rush a bunch of Imperial Grunts down one lane, but it leaves your other completely exposed. I have no doubt that lane management will be a key ability in this game, and a relatively difficult one to come by.
Overall, along with a discard/graveyard feature similar to Magic: The Gathering, this game shows potential as an eSports competitor. It has the promotion, name and popularity of the Elder Scrolls series, and an overall surprisingly excited community. Two thousand plus reddit users have contributed to the creation of an Elder Scrolls: Legends subreddit which is only growing in popularity. My point? We’ll just have to wait and see. If it ends up as a popular eSport, you heard it here first, but if not, will it be forgotten like so many other competitors?
