Surprise Halo Infinite Update Adds New Firefight: Gauntlet Mode

Halo Infinite has received an unexpected new update, introducing a brand-new PvE mode called Firefight: Gauntlet. The release comes as a surprise to many players who believed the game had already reached the end of its major content support cycle.

Although many fans are currently waiting for Halo: Campaign Evolved later this year, Halo Infinite continues to attract an active player base nearly five years after launch. Since releasing in 2021, the game has received numerous multiplayer updates, but Halo Studios previously indicated that major seasonal content would conclude at the end of 2025. Despite that, the studio has now delivered a substantial new gameplay experience.

Firefight: Gauntlet Brings a New Twist to PvE

Released on May 5, the update introduces Firefight: Gauntlet, a new cooperative mode where four players battle through five increasingly difficult combat arenas. Each arena is filled with endless enemy waves that only stop once players defeat powerful champions equipped with advanced weapons and gear.

As matches progress, the difficulty steadily increases. If squads take too long to eliminate champions, the Harbinger can also enter the battlefield, making encounters even more dangerous.

Between rounds, players return to a hub area where they have 30 seconds to prepare before entering the next arena. During this downtime, Spartans can change loadouts, restock equipment, and spend upgrade points earned throughout the match.

The new progression system allows players to improve four core attributes:

  • Damage
  • Recovery
  • Resistance
  • Speed

Each category includes four upgrade tiers, letting players customize their Spartan toward aggressive, defensive, or mobility-focused playstyles.

New AI Aggro System Changes Combat Strategy

One of the most unique additions in Firefight: Gauntlet is the new AI Aggro system.

Enemy attention is now dynamically tracked during gameplay. Players who eliminate more enemies attract greater attention from AI forces, while hiding inside Shroud Screens reduces enemy focus. Arena champions specifically target the player with the highest aggro level, marked by VIP visual effects.

Halo Studios says the mechanic is designed to add another strategic layer to combat, encouraging squads to actively manage enemy attention during fights.

Revives, Randomized Arenas, and Special Equipment

Gauntlet also introduces a revive mechanic. Downed players leave behind revive orbs that teammates can interact with to bring them back immediately, though automatic respawns still occur after 30 seconds.

To improve replayability, several gameplay elements are randomized every match, including:

  • Arena order
  • Enemy wave compositions
  • Champion encounters
  • Weapon restocks in the hub area

Some champions may also appear using Active Camo, making them significantly harder to locate during combat.

The mode also enhances power equipment with unique effects. Active Camo removes enemy attention entirely, Overshields provide temporary invincibility while drawing all aggro toward the user, and Repulsors can stun standard enemies.

Two New Forge Maps Added

The update also adds two new Forge-created maps built specifically for Gauntlet:

Map
Featured Locations
Munera Platform H6
Banished train car, volcanic UNSC base, Flood-infested facility
Munera Platform W4
Forerunner chamber, UNSC hangar, Banished excavation site

Both maps feature multiple themed combat arenas tailored to the mode’s escalating difficulty.

New Playlist and Release Details

A dedicated playlist called The Gauntlet is now available in matchmaking. The playlist will remain active until May 19, after which the mode and maps will move into Halo Infinite’s standard Firefight rotation.

Known Issues

Halo Studios also acknowledged several issues currently affecting the update.

Some post-match statistics in the Carnage Report incorrectly display zero values after Gauntlet matches, including grenade kills, headshots, melee kills, and power weapon eliminations. Players who join ongoing matches also begin with only one upgrade point, regardless of team progression.

The studio also noted that players may occasionally become temporarily stuck during matches, though movement usually returns after a few seconds. In rare cases, downed players at the end of a round may fail to return to the hub area until the next arena begins.
