Sony has said it is unlikely that shipments of PlayStation 5 consoles will skyrocket in the current fiscal year, which ends March 31, 2022.

In its latest financial statements, released today, April 28, the corporation reported that PS5 shipments were marginally ahead of PS4s in the same period (7.8 million versus 7.6 million). Sony said its current target for PS5's second fiscal year was to surpass 14.8 million copies.

However, Sony's CFO said the company does not expect to fully address the supply issues that have caused the PS5 to quickly sell out since launch.

Hiroki Totoki said Sony is currently considering various solutions to the problem that will help it cope with a global hardware component shortage, including potential hardware redesigns or sourcing of secondary suppliers.

When asked specifically about the semiconductor shortage that affects every consumer electronics industry from smartphones to automobiles, Totoki suggested that Sony has the tools to help get out of the situation.

Sony's comments follow Microsoft's warnings during the release of financial statements this week, in which it said it expects continued supply problems for the Xbox Series X/S.

AMD, which makes chips for the Xbox Series X/S and PS5, also said it expects supply problems by the end of the first half of 2021.
