Sony Says Marvel’s Wolverine Improved PlayStation's Quarterly Financial Results
Despite widespread anticipation, Marvel's Wolverine, released by Insomniac Games in September, turned out to be quite controversial. This was evident from both critics' reviews and the opinions of regular players. For a long time, Sony did not reveal the project's financial results, but now the cards are on the table—and the results, to put it mildly, are far from impressive.
Sony recently released its latest financial report, which revealed that since September 15, Marvel's Wolverine has sold a modest 2.4 million copies. And while that’s a decent number, it pales in comparison to the studio’s previous projects, especially the Marvel’s Spider-Man duology. Nevertheless, according to Sony reps, as mentioned by IGN, the company is satisfied with the results. Marvel’s Wolverine boosted the gaming segment’s performance for the quarter, as you can check out below:
“Regarding first-party titles, cumulative sales of Marvel’s Wolverine, released in September, exceeded 2.4 million units, contributing to the improved results of the entire segment for the quarter. We leveraged our expertise building the Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise to create a differentiated action game experience for Marvel’s Wolverine. Users have praised the new title for its highly immersive action, high-quality production, and richly layered storytelling.”
Initially, it was reported that Marvel's Wolverine would need to sell 6 million copies in its first year to meet Sony's targets and secure funding for future projects. As insider Tom Henderson notes, with a budget of $305 million, the game still needs to sell 3.4 million copies to recoup costs due to Marvel’s 20% licensing fee.
Despite the fact that sales of Marvel's Wolverine haven't been particularly strong so far, a recent report confirmed Insomniac is preparing to expand the franchise. According to job postings, their next project will feature multiple playable characters —and fans have concluded the game will be centered on the X-Men. Additionally, Insomniac is reportedly actively developing Marvel's Venom and Marvel's Spider-Man 3, both of which are set to release in the coming years.
Marvel’s Wolverine is available exclusively on PlayStation 5.
