Borderlands Series Sales Top 100 Million Copies

Gearbox has announced that the Borderlands series has sold more than 100 million copies. The studio shared the milestone in a message to the community, published a little over a year after Borderlands 4 launched.

Gearbox noted that few franchises have ever reached that number. The studio thanked fans who have stuck with the series since the first Borderlands in 2009. It also said that community feedback pushes it to make better games.

In the same message, Gearbox looked back at the first year of Borderlands 4 support. Over that time, the game got two Story Packs, five Bounty Packs, two new Vault Hunters, and a batch of new features and activities.

The DLC with the new Vault Hunter Loveless, an ex-hacker turned assassin, drew the most attention. She arrived on September 10, 2026, together with update 1.10 and a free weekend on Steam. Borderlands 4’s player count jumped as a result. On September 11, the Steam peak hit 16,475 players, while the August average sat at just over 4,000. The game also climbed to third place on Steam’s top sellers chart.

The Year 1 roadmap is now finished, and the studio is already working on new Borderlands 4 content for next year. Weekly activities and Community Challenges will continue. Gearbox is also thinking about where to take the franchise as a whole. The developers are asking fans which characters they want to spend more time with and which storylines deserve a payoff. The Hunt, the Borderlands community’s annual charity event, starts on November 6. Last time, players raised a record $118,995.80 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This year, 2K Foundations and Gearbox will match every dollar donated, up to last year’s record.
