Beyond Good and Evil 2 Is Still in Pre-Production at Ubisoft - Game Was First Revealed in 2017
It’s common for game development to take too long, but in the case of one Ubisoft project, this seems to be a truly special case. This is the long-suffering Beyond Good and Evil 2, which was announced back in 2008 and first shown at E3 2017.
As it turns out, despite all these years, Beyond Good and Evil 2 is still in the pre-production stage and has not yet moved on to full-scale development. The French media Origami shared this news, also revealing other details about the game. Initially, Ubisoft wanted to put the focus on an online project and even include a Destiny-style social hub, but now it’s a fully single-player experience with about 250 employees at Ubisoft Montpellier working on it. The reason for this lengthy development cycle is that much of Beyond Good and Evil 2’s mechanics have been reworked over the years, not to mention the difficult situation at Ubisoft due to regular layoffs and the ongoing restructuring process. Finally, Origami adds that a decision will be made soon on whether the game will move into full-scale development or if management’s plans will change and the project will be canceled outright.
Beyond Good and Evil 2 is reportedly still n pre-production at Ubisoft Montpellier.
- Team of at least 250 people currently working on it.
- Game has shifted its design focus to a "solo first" experience.
- Previously centered on a connected multiplayer world featuring multiple planets and natural matchmaking, between 2019-2022.
- Earlier plans included “The Third Place” (a Destiny-style social hub) and a premise where players controlled an empty character riding in the passenger seat of the main heroes' adventures with dynamically generated activities.
Throughout the year, we've heard reports that Ubisoft has canceled quite a few of its projects—both confirmed and unannounced—including Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, a Far Cry title in the “extraction” genre, and, as was recently unveiled, an Assassin’s Creed game set in Ancient China. Despite this, however, work on Beyond Good and Evil 2 is ongoing, and there have even been rumors the game might theoretically be revealed this year. So far, Ubisoft has not officially announced anything about this long-suffering project.
Beyond Good and Evil 2 is the prequel to the original title, released in 2003. The game is rumored to be in development for PC, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. The release date is currently unknown.
