New Battlefield Game Is In Early Stages of Development at Electronic Arts

Yesterday, Electronic Arts announced plans for a large-scale restructuring linked to the company’s new owners from Saudi Arabia, who took over this summer. Reports also covered future plans, including the continued development of the first-person shooter series, at least according to reliable insiders.

This wasn’t mentioned in EA’s initial report, but several insiders claim the company has started work on a new Battlefield game - it is in early development and isn’t expected anytime soon. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier stated EA will keep developing the franchise despite Battlefield 6’s underwhelming performance, and Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson added that the next numbered game won’t come out until at least late 2028.

EA says Battlefield 6 is a great success and will develop more Battlefield games. Insider Gaming says they understand that the next Battleifled game is in early development and won’t release for some time (they speculate late 2028 at the earliest).

Despite a strong start, Battlefield 6 failed to build a massive long-term player base, and in more than a year since release, it has faced widespread criticism several times. EA will still support the game: Season 5 launched on October 13 with several new maps, weapons, the new Operation High Roller mode, and even a Dead Space crossover. As with Battlefield 2042, EA is expected to add the new content for the sixth installment until the next one arrives. Additionally, there is a movie adaptation of Battlefield in the works. Sony Pictures is reportedly serving as the producing company, with Christopher McQuarrie, known for his work on the Mission: Impossible franchise and Top Gun: Maverick, to direct and write a script. There is also a word that Michael B. Jordan, star of Black Panther and Sinners, could play a lead role in a Battlefield movie.

On other official EA news, the company has confirmed they are working on Star Wars Battlefront 3, developed by a joint team from DICE (which made several Battlefield games) and Respawn Entertainment (Titanfall, Apex Legends, and Star Wars Jedi). It also became known that BioWare is shutting down and Mass Effect 5, which had been in early development for a few years, has been canceled.
