How Control Resonant Sets Up Alan Wake III

Last month, Remedy Entertainment released Control: Resonant—a new installment in the series that significantly expands the studio’s shared universe. The game continues the story of the 2019 original, but this time we take control of Dylan Faden—the brother of Jesse, the main heroine of the first game—and save Manhattan from a dangerous threat.

Control Resonant has received high praise from critics and players alike, and Remedy recently announced the game sold 1 million copies three weeks after its release, making it the studio’s fastest-selling title to reach that milestone. As expected, the game also laid the groundwork for Remedy’s future titles, and this recent discovery is particularly interesting in the context of the new Alan Wake installment, as it offers a teaser of what the game might be about.

Users have discovered an “Easter egg” hidden in one of Control Resonant’s game world areas. It consists of a video titled “Master of Many Worlds,” which reveals that, following the events of Alan Wake II, the titular writer is working as a night watchman at AWE; Alex Casey, played by Sam Lake, is also present, and The Skratch—the main antagonist of Alan Wake II—is mentioned. If you haven’t seen this “Easter egg” in Control Resonant that references Alan Wake yet, you can check it out below:

Remedy is famous for how it teases its upcoming games; we all remember how Control received a DLC that brought back Alan Wake, while the Alan Wake II DLC, The Lake House, contained a direct teaser for Control: Resonant —including a cameo by Dylan—long before the game was announced. As we can see, the studio’s new game has continued this tradition. Furthermore, fans recently discovered that the game contains another “Easter egg” related to Alan Wake—namely, a hidden Morse code message hinting at the return of Barry Wheeler, the writer’s friend and agent.

It’s possible that Control Resonant, like the original, will receive a story-driven DLC in the future that reveals even more connections to Alan Wake III. As for the third installment itself, last month Remedy renewed the trademark rights for “Alan Wake Returns.” What's more, Kyle Rowley, the game director of the second title, has been working on an unannounced project since January 2021. Given the aforementioned “Easter egg,” everything points to the announcement of the third Alan Wake game being just a matter of time.
