Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Co-Creator Is Tired of "Chosen One" RPGs: "They're Still Games for Teenagers"

Martin Klíma, co-founder of Warhorse Studios, the team behind the Kingdom Come: Deliverance series, has criticized modern RPGs. In an interview with PC Gamer, he said he's long been tired of role-playing games that keep reusing the same formula.

What frustrates Klíma most are stories about a "chosen one" destined to save the world. He was quick to add that he doesn't see anything wrong with the idea itself.

I was really and I still am bored and tired of all the RPGs when you are this chosen one, when you have this grand task of saving the universe. It's not that I think it's somehow wrong in principle. There is nothing bad about a good power fantasy. It's just, it's so repetitive.

Klíma believes most of these games still target a very young audience, even though players have grown up.

The games that were and sort of are being made are still the games for teenagers. If you are 16, 17, you love playing these power fantasy games because it's something that you need. But the audience is much older today

He also took aim at big publishers that keep repeating proven recipes, singling out Ubisoft, but Klíma gave the French company's developers credit for their skill. He just thinks they could put that talent to better use.

They are really best at recycling the same formula over and over. When I'm talking about this, I really mean more games like games from Ubisoft. But I can't help but feel that this craftsmanship would be better served by creating a game that's a little bit more innovative

Kingdom Come: Deliverance went the other way on purpose. The series' protagonist, Henry, is a blacksmith's son with no supernatural powers and no special destiny. He gets swept up in a medieval conflict and has to survive, growing stronger only through his own effort.

Klíma also understands why big studios hesitate to take risks. AAA budgets now run into the hundreds of millions of dollars, so a failed experiment can cost a company dearly:

I appreciate the dilemma that they have, and I don't have any easy answers for it

Warhorse's latest game, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, came out in February 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and earned high praise from critics and players. The developers recently announced that the game will be released on the Switch 2 next year.
