Ninja Theory Could Be Shut Down Soon, as Negotiations with Studios Broke Down

This summer, as part of the Xbox restructuring, it was announced that Ninja Theory—the studio known for the Hellblade series— was separating from the company and in talks with potential new owners. A little over two months later, Microsoft’s gaming division underwent another round of layoffs and changes as part of the restructuring—but, unfortunately for Ninja Theory, it seems the situation has only gotten worse.

Xbox has issued an official statement regarding the ongoing restructuring process. It has been reported that Ninja Theory was ultimately unable to find a new owner; negotiations were held with two potential buyers, but they did not lead to a deal. Xbox is currently discussing the possibility of closing the studio, but other options are also being considered.

Microsoft is considering shutting down Ninja Theory, the studio behind Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II.

The studio has already failed twice to find a buyer. Microsoft is discussing a possible closure with employees while still looking for other options, including a sale.

The closure isn’t confirmed, but the Hellblade team’s future looks uncertain.

The most disappointing thing is that this summer, Ninja Theory announced Senua —a new chapter in the Hellblade franchise. Unlike the two previous games, the third installment is aimed at a broader audience. The project does not yet have an estimated release date, and if Ninja Theory were to shut down, its risks being canceled. Meanwhile, as revealed via Insider Gaming, last week Microsoft trademarked the Senua’s IP – probably, to retain the rights on the franchise.

In other news, it was announced Activision will be developing a new Halo game, and according to the initial description, it will be a “full-featured, mainline installment in the franchise.” A studio separated from the one responsible for Call of Duty will be in charge.
