New Avengers Video Game Rumored to Be in Development

Unlike movies, Avengers video games haven’t been nearly as successful. In 2012, THQ was set to release a game timed to coincide with the release of same-titled movie from the Marvel Studios, but it was ultimately cancelled. And in 2020, Marvel's Avengers, developed by Crystal Dynamics, despite its considerable potential, turned out to be a real nightmare and a failure for Square Enix, who served as the publisher. So much so that three years later, support for it was ended, and the game was removed from all digital stores.

Nevertheless, there is a chance that in the near future, news will emerge about the development of a new Avengers game. At least, that’s what well-known insider Daniel Richtman reports. According to him, this will be a completely new project, though it is not yet known who will be responsible for its development or who will serve as the publisher. Only one thing is clear: this is yet another project being developed in collaboration with Marvel Games.

RUMOR: A new Avengers AAA video game is in development

• The project is confirmed to be completely unrelated to Crystal Dynamics or Square Enix’s disastrous 2020 live-service adaptation.
• Neither the developing studio nor the publishing partner have been revealed.
• Follows a massive wave of standalone Marvel projects currently in production, including Insomniac’s Wolverine, EA’s Iron Man, Skydance’s 1943: Rise of Hydra and Blade.

Given that, as noted above, several single-player games featuring various Marvel characters are currently in development, it’s reasonable to assume the new Avengers title will also be single-player. And that would indeed be a rational decision considering the aforementioned Marvel’s Avengers was a flop.

As for the Avengers movies, Avengers: Endgame—Encore, an extended version of the original film released in 2019, will premiere this week. It will include several new scenes and even post-credits scenes that set up events for Avengers: Doomsday—the next major MCU crossover, set to be out this December. Recently, some details about the post-credit scenes have also been revealed.
