Bungie Announces Return of Vaulted Destiny 2 Content, Says It Isn't Done With the Game

Bungie has released a video address and an open letter titled "The Next Chapter for Bungie." In it, studio leadership admits it lost players' trust over the past few years and announces the return of vaulted Destiny 2 content.

The letter, dated September 17, 2026, is signed by studio head Poria Torkan and Josh Deane, head of product and general manager of Marathon. The authors talk about the lost trust, the colleagues who left, and how the studio drifted from its priorities, the first of which should be the players. They say they aren't asking anyone to take their word for it. They want to earn trust through the quality of their games and consistent decisions, and they state that Bungie isn't done with Destiny.

As a reminder, Destiny 2 stopped receiving new content updates in June 2026, when Monument of Triumph released. The decision came after The Edge of Fate expansion disappointed players with bugs and controversial systems and pushed player counts to record lows. Bungie also shifted its focus to other projects.

The most important part of the announcement concerns vaulting, the removal of old content from the game. Bungie confirmed it has started work on bringing back vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids. All players will have access to them. The developers admit that removing the content did serious damage to trust and to players' enjoyment of the game. For many, Destiny 2 has long been the place where they made shared memories and friends. The studio says it can't undo the decision but can fix its consequences.

Don't expect a quick return. According to Bungie, this isn't a matter of restoring old files. Many systems have changed since Beyond Light, so the team has to update lighting, encounters, enemies, and other core elements to meet today's standards for stability and gameplay. Bungie promises more details on the unvaulting in the coming months.

Following the announcement, an unofficial list of content that could return has appeared online. It includes:

• Destiny 2 base game: the Red War campaign, the Titan and Io destinations with their strikes (including Festering Core), the Leviathan raid, Adventures, and the Crucible maps Emperor's Respite, Legion's Gulch, and Retribution.
• Curse of Osiris: the campaign, Mercury with its strikes, the Eater of Worlds raid lair, and Adventures.
• Warmind: the campaign, Mars with its strikes, the Spire of Stars raid lair, and Adventures.
• Forsaken: the parts of the campaign tied to the vaulted destination, the Tangled Shore with a strike, and the Crown of Sorrow and Scourge of the Past raid lairs.

The list's authors mark seasonal content, unique strike loot, and loot in general as unknown. A question mark sits next to one of the Tangled Shore strikes. Bungie's letter names no specific content, so nothing guarantees that everything on the list will return.

The developers also addressed Marathon in the official letter. According to leadership, the game got strong critical reception but didn't reach the audience they hoped for. It was never meant to replace Destiny.

The studio now wants to keep what makes Marathon distinct while pushing it past the genre limits it set for itself. The game will move toward a deeper survival experience with co-op PvE, PvP, and PvPvE. Announced plans include the October Nightfall Refresh and the December Symbiosis update. Bungie says it will share more about Marathon's future soon.

The studio set out four commitments it wants to be judged by:

1. Build a stronger long-term future for Destiny, and honor and restore its past.
2. Evolve Marathon to grow its community and secure a sustainable future.
3. Be more transparent about development priorities.
4. Communicate progress more consistently, especially when plans change.

Bungie says it has simplified its priorities, cut competing initiatives, moved decisions closer to the development teams, and changed how it measures success to put more weight on player satisfaction. Together with its community team, the studio is building a regular format for reporting on these commitments and will introduce it alongside the next major Destiny and Marathon updates.

Bungie hasn't given specific dates or a list of content yet. The next announcements will most likely reveal exactly which vaulted content is coming back to Destiny 2.
