Rockstar Games Is Making Changes About Modding of Their Games, Including GTA 6

Plenty of PC players are already looking forward to modding GTA 6, whether that's graphical overhauls, character or celebrity skins, or even mods bringing back locations from earlier games in the series. However, it turns out a lot of that might not be possible with the sixth installment.

A new post on Rockstar Games' official website lays out updated modding rules covering its games, including GTA 6, and according to players, they're fairly restrictive. The rules state modders can't use content from Rockstar games in other projects, incorporate protected IP, recreate real-world locations, etc. More details about this case you can check out below:

Rockstar has released new modding rules for its games, including GTA 6, and some players worry what this means for the future of mods, especially for PC gamers.

The rules ban reusing Rockstar’s content in other projects, changing official characters or stories, using copyrighted characters or music, and making money from mods without permission.

Some of these rules make sense, especially the ban on multiplayer cheats. Others could make it harder for fans to create new stories, maps and custom experiences.

GTA 5 has stayed popular for years partly thanks to its modding community. Roleplay servers like NoPixel show how much players can create beyond the original game.

That matters because GTA V, which launched on PC back in 2015, has stayed relevant largely thanks to an enormous modding scene, particularly around RP servers. The same holds true for other games in the series: GTA IV with graphics mods can look even better than a GTA V without them, and some fans have gone as far as stitching GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas together into one playable experience using custom mods.

Interestingly, it's also thanks to modding that GTA V has offered a glimpse of what GTA 6 looked like back in 2015. That came from a nearly 200GB data leak tied to GTA V, which confirmed a planned Liberty City DLC based on GTA IV and revealed several other details along the way.
