Valheim 1.0 Progression Guide: Biome Order, Bosses, and What to Do at Each Stage

Valheim 1.0 has launched in full, adding a final biome, the Deep North, and a lot of new content. The game is still open-ended, but progression follows a clear chain of biomes and Forsaken bosses, and each boss drops what you need to reach the next stage. This guide covers each location, the resources you can find there, and the boss that guards it.

Progression runs through eight biomes, from the easy Meadows to the Deep North, which arrived with the 1.0 release. A Forsaken boss guards each biome, and beating it gives you the key items for the next stage. You can sail to any biome from the start, but without the items earlier bosses drop, you won't survive there for long.

Meadows

Resources: Wood, Stone, Flint, Resin, Deer Hide, Leather Scraps, Raw Meat, Honey, and berries.

Meadows is the first and easiest biome in Valheim. Wide open fields and light forests give you room to get used to the world. You craft your first items and gather resources without much danger. Only boars and a few weak creatures show up, and you can beat them or outrun them.

The boss of the first area is Eikthyr, a big stag that throws lightning and charges at you. When you beat him, you get Hard Antlers, which you craft into the Antler Pickaxe. You need that pickaxe to mine copper and tin in the next biome.

Black Forest

Resources: Copper, Tin, Core Wood, Surtling Cores, Thistle.

A dense, dark forest full of tall trees. Greydwarfs, forest creatures that attack in groups, roam here, along with big, dangerous trolls. Stay away from the trolls until you have better weapons. This is where you start smelting metal. Copper and tin make bronze, which gives you your first serious weapons and armor.

The boss is The Elder, a giant living tree that lashes out with its roots and stomps. You need three Ancient Seeds to summon him, and fire hurts him most. He drops the Swamp Key, which opens the Sunken Crypts in the Swamp, where you mine iron.

Swamp

Resources: Iron Scrap, Ancient Bark, Guck, Bloodbags, Turnip seeds.

A gloomy, wet swamp where it rains all the time. Draugr (walking corpses), Leeches, and Blobs live here, and some of them can poison you. The main resource is iron, which sits in the Sunken Crypts and gives you stronger weapons and armor.

The boss is Bonemass, a huge poisonous mass of bones and slime. You summon him with ten Withered Bones, and blunt weapons like a mace hurt him most. He drops the Wishbone, which helps you find silver in the Mountains.

Mountains

Resources: Silver, Obsidian, Crystal, Freeze Glands, Wolf Pelts.

Snowy peaks are so cold that you lose health fast without protection. Wolves, Drakes (dragon-like hunters), and stone golems live here. Silver is the biome's main prize and makes powerful weapons, while the other materials go into warm gear.

The boss is Moder, a dragoness who spends most of the fight in the air and breathes ice, so bring a bow. You summon her with three Dragon Eggs. She drops the Dragon Tear, which you need for a new crafting table. Beating her also adds new items to the trader's stock that make the game easier.

Plains

Resources: Black Metal Scrap, Barley, Flax, Tar, Cloudberries.

Wide grasslands covered in tall grass. Fulings (small green warriors with their own villages), giant mosquitoes called Deathsquitos, and big Lox live here. The biome gives you resources for a new tier of Black Metal weapons and armor, plus Barley and new recipes for food and cloth.

The boss is Yagluth, who hits with fire and lightning and slams the ground hard. You need five Fuling Totems from the villages to summon him. He drops the Torn Spirit, which you use to build a Wisp Fountain. The fountain helps you find your way in the next biome.

Mistlands

Resources: Yggdrasil Wood, Soft Tissue, Carapace, Black Marble, Sap, Eitr.

Thick fog hides almost everything, so you struggle without a Wisplight. Many enemies look like insects and attack from nowhere. This biome opens up magic, with staffs, new workstations, and armor made from carapace.

The boss is The Queen, who leads the Seekers. Her fight has several phases, and she adds new attacks as it goes while more Seekers join in. When you win, you get Majestic Carapace, and Haldor starts selling new items.

Ashlands

Valheim 1.0 Progression Guide: Biome Order, Bosses, and What to Do at Each Stage 8

Resources: Flametal Ore, Grausten, Charred Wood.

A volcanic land of lava, ash, and constant fire. Even prepared players find it dangerous, so bring fire protection and your best food. Fire skeletons, flying valkyries, and pools of lava wait for you here. You find materials for new Flametal weapons and Grausten building blocks.

The boss is Fader, a fire demon who fights you in a long, exhausting battle in an arena. To summon him, you perform a ritual at his altar. Beating him opens the way to the final biome, the Deep North.

Deep North

Resources: Bloodgold, Embers, Malicious Blood, and other new materials.

The last and hardest biome is a cold, snowy north. Deep snow makes building and moving difficult, so you need frost protection and a shovel to set up a base. Gremlins, big stone Gammeltrolls, and phantoms in the dungeons attack you here.

The final boss is Kall Fimbulbringer, a large chained jotun who, in Norse mythology, appears before Ragnarok. When you beat him, you get a Crown Jewel, which you use to craft the Crown of Valheim, and the crown scares enemies off. You also get Sacrificial Blood. Take it to the place where you started the game to trigger the final cutscene.

What the Valheim 1.0 Patch Added

Even if you know Valheim well, the final patch adds a lot of new content and a new progression path, so you will have plenty to do. The headline addition is the Deep North biome, which completes the game. Alongside it come new weapons, four armor sets, capes, tools, creatures, building pieces, crafting materials, and food.
