Avalanche Studios' Iron Man Game—Gameplay Footage Leaked

Over the years, Avalanche Studios—best known for the Just Cause franchise as well as Mad Max—has canceled several projects, including Contraband, a co-op action game published by Xbox Game Studios, as well as an open-world Star Wars game developed in collaboration with Lucasfilm, etc. As it turns out, the studio was also developing an Iron Man game, and the first gameplay footage from the canceled title has surfaced.

It is known that Avalanche was working on an Iron Man game in the early 2010s, as previously confirmed by the studio’s then-head, Christopher Sundberg. Thanks to the leak, players can get a sense of what the game might have been like—visually, it closely resembles Just Cause 2, which was released in 2010, but with some changes. For instance, the game featured environmental destruction mechanics, and the combat system was more advanced; in addition to hand-to-hand combat in the style of the Batman: Arkham games, players could utilize various features of the Iron Man suit. Footage from Avalanche Studios cancelled ‘IRON MAN’ game.

Incidentally, this isn’t the only Iron Man game whose footage has recently been leaked. As is well known, EA and Motive Studios are working on Marvel’s Iron Man—a new open-world game being developed on Unreal Engine 5 and announced in 2022. There hadn’t been any news about the game for a long time, but the leaked video showed the first gameplay footage; it also revealed the appearance of several of Tony Stark’s comic book villains. EA, for its part, responded to the leak and promised to share more about Marvel’s Iron Man when they’re ready.

As for Avalanche Studios, the developers are currently working on a new project; according to rumors, it will be an open-world live-service game based on Unreal Engine 5, as suggested by job postings. Speaking of Contraband, files for the game were unexpectedly found in another Avalanche project— Call of the Wild: The Angler. YouTuber Luke JC was able to run a build of the game dated February 2022 on Steam; the developers emphasized detailed and well-crafted locations, survival elements, stealth mechanics, and more. Contraband was canceled last August due to funding issues and mass layoffs within Xbox.
