New A Plague Tale Title Might Be Set in Modern Setting and Look Similar to The Last of Us

Last week, Asobo Games released a new game set in the A Plague Tale universe—Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy. The game serves as a prequel to the main series and tells the story of Sophia. It has received very positive reviews from players and critics alike, and there is already intriguing news about the franchise’s future.

During their visit to Gamescom 2026, the developers spoke to TechRadar Gaming, and they were asked whether A Plague Tale would be set in a modern-day setting. Carol Ann Bañuls, lead writer, replied that “it would be great,” while Anna Demetriou, the voice actress for Sophia, noted that she’s constantly asked about this and believes “it would be really Last of Us kind of.” Finally, Valérian Robert, lead level designer, also responded positively to the idea, stating that it would be an incredible source of inspiration for the studio.

Given how well the A Plague Tale games have performed in a medieval setting, shifting the action to the present day could significantly revitalize the franchise and open up new possibilities for it. Not to mention that the post-credits scene in A Plague Tale: Requiem already hinted at this, as we saw a suggestion that Makula’s curse might exist in the modern world when a newborn baby appeared with black veins and marks, just like Hugo from the first two games. Moreover, a hint about the franchise’s future is also contained in the post-credit scene of Resonance: A Plague Tale.

Speaking of the latest game in the series, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy has received positive reviews from critics and players for its combat system, atmosphere, and development of the main character, although the plot has often been a subject of debate. The game currently has a score of 78 on Metacritic and 82 on OpenCritic.
