How To Play Commander in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam

Commander is the one slot per team that generates resources, spends them, and decides where the faction puts its effort for the next ninety minutes. The role involves very little shooting, and plenty of Commanders never leave the HQ, because the job is reading the map and answering Squad Leaders rather than holding an angle. It is also the role where a single careless call kills a friendly squad, so the habits matter more than the ability list.

What Commander Gameplay Actually Involves

Talking is the requirement, not an optional extra, because you have no eyes on the battlefield beyond what Squad Leaders report and no way to enforce an order they never read. Commanders who stay friendly and specific get obeyed; Commanders who get abusive get muted, and a muted Commander is a team playing with one fewer player. Most of the round is spent on the map, watching sectors change hands, tracking which garrisons are still alive, and queuing abilities as they come off cooldown. You can move up with the infantry and fight if you want, and nothing stops you, but every minute in a firefight is a minute nobody is spending resources. The role sits behind a tutorial requirement, and the rest of the role list and its unlock rules are covered in All 17 Roles in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam and Which One to Pick First.

All Commander Resources in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam

Four resources drive everything a Commander does, and three of them come from nodes that somebody else has to build for you. Your first action of the match is opening the map and pinging where those nodes should go.

Resource
Where it comes from
What it pays for
Munition
Resource nodes, or converted from another resource
Airstrikes, artillery, precision strikes, recon planes, supply airdrops
Manpower
Resource nodes, or converted from another resource
Faster sector capture and defence, dismantling friendly garrisons and tunnels, temporary node output boosts
Fuel
Resource nodes, or converted from another resource
Tanks, trucks, helicopters, boats, and the rest of the logistics chain
Supply
Commander abilities paid for with Munition or Fuel, or dropped by a Specialist
Construction only: garrisons, anti-air guns, defensive structures, and the resource nodes themselves

Note: the three node resources convert into each other for a fee, so a fuel-heavy start is recoverable, but nodes only exist if an Engineer lays the blueprint and somebody with a hammer finishes it.

Commander Abilities and How To Use Them

Build the nodes near the HQ

Node placement is the one decision you cannot fix later.

Ping the node locations on the map before anything else, and keep them close to the HQ where enemy players are unlikely to reach them. A node deep in contested ground looks efficient and dies in the first ten minutes, taking your income with it. Engineers place the blueprints, but any role carrying a hammer can finish the construction, so a Squad Leader can send two Riflemen to complete what one Engineer started. Nodes also cost supplies to build, which means your first supply drop is usually spent on income rather than on spawns. Once the nodes are running, Manpower has an ability that temporarily raises their output, and it is worth saving for the stretch before an expensive push.

Get supplies where the builders are

Every supply method except the airdrop needs a player to drive it.

Both factions share the Airdrop and the Supply Truck, the NVA can also carry supply boxes on boats, and the US side has Supply Helicopters that land on designated points. Each vehicle carries two supply units of 150 supplies apiece, and once they are empty the driver can return to the repair station at the HQ and refill. The Airdrop is the only fully automatic option, which makes it the one to use when nobody is answering your logistics requests. Supplies only matter for construction, so the question is always whether the drop is landing where a Squad Leader is ready to build. Costs and placement rules for everything supplies get spent on sit in How To Build Garrisons, Outposts, and Tunnels in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam.

Run recon before you run strikes

A recon plane turns guesswork into targets.

Do not call recon in the opening minutes, because players are still moving into position and the picture you buy will be obsolete before the cooldown ends. Wait until the front settles and the sector has a shape, then fly the plane along a vertical line rather than a horizontal or diagonal one. Enemies tend to spread out vertically relative to the battle line, so a vertical sweep reveals flanks and troop concentration far better than cutting across them. The information also has a short shelf life, which is exactly why strikes should follow immediately rather than waiting for a better moment. Treat recon as the first half of an attack rather than as a standalone ability.

Spend strikes on confirmed targets only

Strikes are expensive, slow to recharge, and easy to waste.

Order them right after a recon plane, when you have the clearest picture you are going to get all round. When intel comes in from a single Squad Leader, ask a second one to confirm before you commit, because one wrong grid reference turns your best ability into a cooldown you spent on empty jungle. Airstrikes earn their cost against a mass push or against vehicles your Grenadiers cannot handle, so holding one for two minutes is often better than firing it the second it lights up. Always tell Squad Leaders before the bombs land and give them time to pull their units out of the area, since friendly fire from your own strike does more damage to your credibility than to your resource pool. Precision Strike is the specialist tool here, and it exists mainly for stationary targets.

Hunt garrisons and keep reserves

Spawn denial wins more rounds than kills do.

Enemy garrisons and tunnels are stationary, which makes them ideal Precision Strike targets once somebody marks the exact location, and Bombing Run or Artillery Strike will cover you when the marker is approximate. Your own garrisons will be found and destroyed the same way, especially any that sit near the contested sector, so drop supplies at a reserve position early and have a Squad Leader ready to rebuild the moment one dies. A team pushed back onto distant spawns arrives at the objective in a trickle and loses sectors it should have held. As the NVA Commander you have an easier time here, because tunnels cost no supplies at all and let troops connect a rear spawn to the front even after a garrison falls. Plan the tunnel network as a ring around the sector you are attacking or defending, so your infantry can appear on more than one side of it.

Best Commander Strategy for Hell Let Loose: Vietnam

Open with nodes, then garrisons, then logistics, and resist spawning every vehicle at once, since a queue of helicopters handed to inexperienced pilots turns into a queue of wrecks. When you are defending, push Squad Leaders to have their Engineers and Specialists build on the roads leading into the sector, because that is what stops an armoured push rather than another infantry squad. Keep an eye on the garrison map at all times, since the same round is being fought against your spawns as against your soldiers. Which of those priorities matters most depends on the mode you are in, and the differences between Warfare, Conquest, Domination, and Offensive are laid out in All Game Modes in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam Explained.
