Xbox Age Verification Hits Australia for R18+ Games in Late August

Microsoft has started telling Australian players that adult Xbox accounts will need a verified age before they can buy or open anything rated R18+ on the Xbox Store and the Microsoft Store on PC. The requirement begins in late August 2026 and covers both consoles and Windows. PressStart picked up the notice after players in the country started receiving Xbox emails and console messages, and Microsoft ties the change to its compliance program in Australia.

Four routes through the check are available. Email-based verification is the lightest, and for an account that has existed long enough, it may be the only step Microsoft asks for. The others are a credit card, a government-issued document such as a passport, driver's license, national ID or residence permit, and facial age estimation from a selfie. Microsoft has published a link for anyone who wants to clear the check before the prompt shows up.

Libraries already bought stay where they are.

"Apps and games you already own won't be affected."

Everything else can be closed off. The notice says access to R18+ content may be restricted for accounts that skip verification, which puts the wall in front of new purchases and installs rather than the shelf. Sony handled the UK the same way, where the age of an account often settled the question without a document.

Sony introduced age verification for PlayStation Network communication features as well, with messages and voice chat gated behind a selfie, a passport or a driver's license, and accounts that skip it risk losing chat until documents are approved. The UK and Ireland rollout began on April 21 with full implementation due in June, offering a facial scan, an ID or a mobile number. Steam, Xbox, Nexus Mods and Discord were pulled in earlier by the Online Safety Act, and Nintendo is expected to follow.

Discord for teens became the worldwide default in March: sensitive media stays blurred, age-gated servers stay shut, and messages from strangers land in a separate inbox until an account verifies as an adult. Mandatory age verification in Roblox for chat started in the United States in January and went global inside a week, sorting players into six age brackets and disabling chat by default for anyone under nine.

Sherif Saed at Eurogamer points to the campaigns running against these programs, which turn on who collects the documents and how long they hold them. Several US states have written their own rules on top of the UK and Australian ones, so a player with accounts in three countries can meet three checks and three vendors.

Each of those systems runs on a vendor, and the vendors have a record. Cybernews found an unsecured MongoDB database tied to IDMerit, an identity provider used by banks and fintech firms, holding around a billion records across 26 countries, more than 203 million of them in the United States. Names, home addresses, dates of birth, national ID numbers and phone numbers sat there without a password until the company closed the port a day after being told. IDMerit says its own systems were never compromised and describes the report as a ransom attempt. Discord's identity-check vendor lost images of roughly 70,000 government IDs, and Discord has since stopped working with it.

I run a channel about open-world games, and I still can't name the company that would hold my selfie for those few seconds, which bothers me more than the prompt does. I think Microsoft leads with email for that reason: it knows how many players would walk away from a purchase rather than upload a passport.

Xbox content and services revenue fell 10% year over year in the three months to June 30, and Satya Nadella told analysts he expects the business back in growth during fiscal 2027. The verification requirement lands in the same week Microsoft brings 25 games to Gamescom in Cologne, which runs August 24 to 30. I expect Nintendo to be the next name on this list before the year closes, and the EU to copy Australia rather than the reverse.
