The Elder Scrolls Online Pushes Its Trial, PvP Zone and Class Refresh Into 2027
Three weeks after ZeniMax Online Studios lost its leadership team in Xbox's July layoffs, ESO's new game director published the roadmap those cuts produced. In a blog post on 30 July, Nick Giacomini moved three of the year's biggest additions into 2027 and set out a principle for everything that follows: quality experiences over calendar dates.
The Crimson Veldt trial was built around mounted combat, which the letter describes as the reason it needs longer. Update 52 follows it into January 2027, taking the Jerall Pass PvP zone and Skyrim's Dynamic Encounters: Rimegales with it. The third is the Class and Combat refresh, now targeted at 2027, with the studio saying it is discussing interim options for the classes still waiting. That last line is the one that matters most to the people playing tonight, because the Warden refresh players have been asking about for years is inside it.
"we are giving our teams the runway they need to do things right"
— Nick Giacomini
Giacomini acknowledged the organisational changes and departures directly, then framed the delays as quality decisions rather than a resourcing problem. The subreddit did not split the difference:
"I expected drip feed but this is brutal"
— an ESO player on Reddit
Others were more resigned than angry, with one commenter noting that consequences of this kind were always coming after layoffs. The frustration has a specific target: a meta that has been sitting still, which players expected the class refresh to shake loose. Community manager Kevin Gbolie replied that the work is high on the list of things being actively worked on and that the extra time is about delivering quality, adding that the team is looking at shipping a smaller class overhaul in the meantime, though nothing is confirmed.

Seasons were announced in January with a promise of a new era of transparency, and that is the frame Giacomini opens with. The rest of 2026 is still full, which is the part the letter wants read. Update 51 slips a week to 28 September, carrying The Nowhere Vault, a new system called Rumors, and a stack of long-requested conveniences: achievement pinning, a customisable HUD on keyboard platforms, hybridisation, antiquities improvements, transmute stations in Cyrodiil, a housing tab sorter and Eidetic Memory changes. Three-sided Battlegrounds return permanently on the same date. Season Two arrives 21 October with the Moon Hunter Keep and March of Sacrifices solo dungeons, and the group versions of both go free for everyone on 12 October, with the Greymoor chapter and Markarth DLC following on 9 November. The event calendar holds too, with Whitestrake's Mayhem from 5 to 12 August, a Golden Pursuit called Straight to the Crate running to 17 September that hands out up to 20 free Crown Crates, and the High Seas of Tamriel event from 30 September.
The staffing behind all of it is where the letter goes quiet. ZeniMax Online lost many employees this month, with WARN filings listing 213 cuts at the studio inside a 379-person total across Microsoft's Maryland offices, which also cover ZeniMax Media and Bethesda Game Studios. Add the 62 lost in 2025 after Project Blackbird was cancelled and the studio has shed roughly 275 people since July 2025, against a union count of 461 members at the end of 2024. Studio head Jo Burba is out after 14 years, alongside executive producer Susan Kath, studio game director Rich Lambert and production director Ala Diaz. Burba had only taken the job a year earlier, after Blackbird's cancellation cost her predecessor Matt Firor the role. Giacomini now runs the place with longtime ZeniMax Online veteran Josh Henderson. A former ESO user experience lead has put the game's revenue at roughly $15 million a month across more than a decade. I think quality experiences over calendar dates would read differently in any month other than the one after a studio lost its four most senior people.

The studio's own framing has been that headcount is fine. Senior staff told players at an ESO Tavern event in Germany that the team is now the size it was between 2015 and 2018, when it shipped Wrothgar and Summerset, and id Software offered the same comparison to Doom 2016 a week earlier. Not everyone inside agrees on what that means in practice. Senior encounter designer Morgan Goin told the BBC the studio will not be able to produce content at the speed it did, or anything approaching it, and said she felt blindsided. Another 1,600 cuts across Xbox are expected by July 2027. The wider restructuring removed more than 4,500 gaming staff across Microsoft, with Obsidian losing about a quarter of its team in the same wave.
Sitting underneath the schedule is a structural question. Giacomini presents closer work with Bethesda Game Studios across The Elder Scrolls as new opportunity, a chance to share ideas and align efforts. Read from outside, the same arrangement has fuelled speculation that ZeniMax Online is becoming a support studio for the mainline series, which Giacomini pushed back on by saying the team is not looking to maintain ESO but to grow it, pointing at all-new Skyrim content he says the game has never had. I am more interested in what that coordination does to The Elder Scrolls VI than in what it does to ESO, and this letter does not answer that half.
Bethesda's own note gives some shape to it. The Elder Scrolls VI is a primary priority with the majority of the studio on it, built on Creation Engine 3, though Skyrim is fifteen years old and past 65 million copies with no successor date in sight, and Jason Schreier has said a release inside two years is unlikely. Fallout 5 sits in pre-production on the same engine, with remasters of Fallout 3 and New Vegas confirmed and multiple Fallout projects running at once. Todd Howard denied Bethesda-Obsidian conflict when the subject came up, describing mutual respect between the studios and openness to working together, and separately said he has stopped thinking about retirement.
So ESO keeps its seasons, its events and its free chapters, and loses the trial, the PvP zone and the class overhaul that would have changed how it plays. The gap between those two lists is what a 213-person cut looks like on a calendar. I know the trial is the headline, but the Warden refresh is the delay that lands on players tomorrow, and the smaller interim overhaul that might soften it is still unconfirmed.
Read also, ESO brought community add-ons to consoles last year, switching them on for Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 in June after PC players had used them since 2014. The rollout covers interface add-ons only, leaves PS4 and Xbox One out entirely, and arrived while crossplay was still in development with no announced window.
