Rebel Wolves Isn’t Worried About The Blood of Dawnwalker Sales; The Game’s Quality Is Priority

One of this autumn's most anticipated video games—and one of this year's most intriguing RPGs, by extension—is The Blood of Dawnwalker, the debut project from Rebel Wolves, developed by former developers of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The game borrows a few elements from CD Projekt RED's 2015 hit, though only to a limited extent. In a recent interview, the developers also revealed that the game's financial performance is not their top priority, as they focused primarily on regular players opinions.

Recently, Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, game director of The Blood of Dawnwalker, and environment artist Adam Payet spoke with Radio Times Gaming, revealing the team is not considering financial success as its main goal, even though that's obviously still important. What matters more to the studio is that players actually enjoy the game—and, as they see it, strong sales tend to follow naturally from making a good project. You can check out Tomaszkiewicz's fuller answer on this below:

“First of all, we are not thinking this way; it’s a different way of thinking because we are artists, and all of us, the funders of the company, are the guys who are doing the developer jobs. I am the game director; my brother is the creative director, we have a guy that’s responsible for the art, the narration and so on. Since we don’t want to measure our games in millions of sales…I mean, you need to have money, of course, to create the next part, but we want to create those challenges in front of us and the goals this way to fulfill our artistic and creative need.

I would prefer to measure the game from the opinion of fans and this energy when they like the game, And if it’s possible, maybe some awards, which will be excellent for us as artists. Not in the sales, because sales are secondary; I believe that if the game is good, there will be (the) sales. But if you’re thinking about the sales, when you create the game and you try to design the game to achieve sales, it will fail.”

Additionally, during a recent Q&A session related to The Blood of Dawnwalker, Rebel Wolves confirmed the game won't include any mini-games, nor will it use Denuvo anti-piracy protection. The developers also promised a wealth of side activities, including hidden quests that don't appear on the map.

As for a possible The Blood of Dawnwalker sequel, considering Komaszkiewicz's comments, the studio would still need the original title to sell well—especially since it's already essentially confirmed the second installment, with its events set in a modern-day world.
