Pragmata 2 Chances Are High After Capcom's 2.51 Million Sales

Capcom corporate officer Yoshikazu Shimauchi said the chances of a Pragmata sequel are high, speaking during the discussion of the publisher's first-quarter results. Bloomberg reported the comment, and it is the closest anyone at Capcom has come to confirming a follow-up to the company's first new IP in years. No sequel has been announced.

Two single-player games carried Capcom's half-year, Requiem in February and Pragmata in April, and both arrived with strong reviews. Pragmata has sold 2.51 million units worldwide in three months on the market. Shimauchi said the game outran Capcom's internal expectations, and he put that down to the pre-release campaign and to the appeal of Diana, the android who handles hacking while the player controls Hugh Williams.

Pragmata cleared a million copies in two days and sold 2 million copies by day 16, then spent the rest of the quarter adding another half a million. Capcom marked the second milestone with a drawing from Diana on the game's X account. The project was first shown in 2020 and took six years to finish. Capcom USA COO Rob Dyer called that time "worth the effort" earlier this summer, when he described Pragmata as another IP the publisher can keep going down, without committing to a sequel.

Capcom posted operating profit of 41.1 billion yen, about $251 million, for the three months ended June, against a consensus estimate of 22.1 billion yen. Shares in the Osaka company climbed as much as 19% on Wednesday, to around 4,229 yen, its biggest gain since January 2014.

Older games did most of that work. Capcom moved a record 21.26 million catalog units between April and June, nearly double the 13.36 million from the same quarter a year earlier, with Resident Evil and Devil May Cry entries selling on Switch 2 and at discount. Toyo Research Advice analyst Hideki Yasuda said he had never seen a catalog figure above 20 million, even in a holiday quarter.

Capcom treats the discounts as a funnel: cheap older titles pull in players who then buy the next major release at full price. The publisher is also pushing its franchises into films, merchandise and theme parks, which reaches people who will never buy a console but will recognize a character.

Pragmata 2 Chances Are High After Capcom's 2.51 Million Sales 1

Resident Evil Requiem sales reached 8 million, which keeps February's release the fastest-selling game in the series and one of the year's louder Game of the Year candidates. That number will climb further as the game gets discounted and the story expansion arrives. Resident Evil 4 Remake sits at 16 million. The Resident Evil 2 remake is now the best-selling game in the franchise at 19.75 million copies, past Resident Evil 5's 19.01 million after fifteen years at the top.

The rest of the back catalog moved another million-plus copies combined over the past few months. Resident Evil 7 is at 18.4 million, Resident Evil Village at 15.8 million and the Resident Evil 3 remake at 14.5 million. Series sales total 213 million, which puts Resident Evil past Final Fantasy and the Wii games as the eighth best-selling franchise in the industry and the largest from a Japanese third-party publisher, with only Mario and Pokemon above it.

Capcom left its full-year operating profit forecast at 83 billion yen after booking close to half of it in one quarter. Yasuda expects a revision when the second-quarter numbers arrive. Onimusha: Way of the Sword lands September 25, and both Resident Evil Veronica and the Requiem story expansion are dated 2027, part of a plan to ship a Resident Evil release every year alongside multi-hour DLC.

An earlier Capcom report already pointed at Pragmata 2 and more new Capcom IPs, on the argument that a fresh franchise costs less to build than a Monster Hunter or a Resident Evil entry and still returns a figure the board can live with. That report credited Pragmata's performance to the team's ideas, the combat system, the sci-fi setting and the pairing of its two leads, and told investors the company may lean harder on original projects because of it.

I think the leads are the part worth watching, because a story built on two characters stuck with each other is why I start a game at all, and Capcom's own read of its sales points the same way.

Director Yonghee Cho has said he wants to make another Pragmata and that the call is not his. He also said the early builds looked bad enough that Capcom came close to canceling the project, which forced the overhaul that produced the version now on sale. The ending teases a sequel, which is why the community has treated a second game as a question of timing.

The game itself is a two-hander on a lunar research station in a near-future dystopia. Hugh carries the firearms and a jetpack, Diana breaks into enemy security systems, and the fight scenes ask the player to run both jobs at the same time, hacking under fire. It is out on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and Switch 2. Next to Requiem the 2.51 million looks small, and against a release calendar this crowded it is a solid first outing for a franchise Capcom had never sold before.

I read the hacking layer as the risk, since solving a grid while something shoots at me becomes pressure rather than novelty. On my own scale that puts Pragmata closer to 007 First Light than to Death Stranding: fresh enough to hold a week, too tightly bounded to keep me wandering for a month.

A sensitive father's Reddit post about his late daughter was at the top of the Pragmata subreddit's all-time list, a board that otherwise runs on combat clips and lore threads. The 55-year-old player wrote about McKenzie, who died in 2009 at the age of eight, and posted her photograph beside an image of Diana. He had not played games since college until his nine-year-old daughter Ella brought him back through Fortnite in February 2024, then Hogwarts Legacy and Red Dead Redemption. Ella spotted the resemblance to her sister in Pragmata footage, and the two of them are about 30% into the story together. Replies run into the hundreds, and Cho answered the thread once a screenshot of it reached X.

Shimauchi gave a probability, not an announcement. Capcom's published schedule runs to Onimusha in September and the Resident Evil releases in 2027, and there is still no Pragmata 2 on it.
