Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil Movie Gets Another Trailer and Includes Some References to Games

Not only is the Resident Evil game series continuing to evolve, as Capcom is currently working on several projects set in the universe, but the franchise is also receiving the attention it deserves on big screens. Zach Cregger, known as the director of Weapons and Barbarian, has decided to make another attempt to adapt the horror series, choosing an unconventional narrative approach and avoiding the use of the series’ iconic heroes and villains.

Ahead of the upcoming premiere, which is less than two months away, a new trailer for the Resident Evil movie has been released, revealing what we should expect from the story this time. The focus is on a delivery man named Bryan (Austin Abrams), who must transport a particularly valuable shipment to Raccoon City. All of this takes place amid an outbreak of the T-virus in the city, but as soon as he arrives, the trailer shows, the protagonist is forced to face trouble and take up arms. Although the film won’t feature familiar characters from the games, such as Leon S. Kennedy, Chris Redfield, or Ada Wong, it does have several connections to the wider universe. As noted by a user on TheGameVerse, the Resident Evil trailer cleverly plays with the placement of weapons, ammunition, and the iconic typewriter where players could save their progress. Most likely, this is just a small part of the references we’ll see in the movie.

In a recent interview, Resident Evil director Zach Cregger admitted that he hadn't watched the franchise's previous adaptations, and he actually liked the fans' reaction to the fact that the upcoming film will be different from anything we've seen before, as it will offer something completely new. The film’s cast includes Paul Walter Hauser, Kali Reis, Austin Abrams, Zach Cherry, and Johnno Wilson. The film will premiere on September 18.

As for Resident Evil video games, Capcom is working on Resident Evil Veronica—the remake of 2000’s original title—and the story DLC for this year’s Resident Evil Requiem. Both titles are set to release in 2027.
