Zach Cregger Responded to Criticism About His Upcoming Resident Evil Adaptation

Resident Evil fans are definitely pleased with how things are going for the franchise this year. In February, Capcom released a new installment in the series—Resident Evil Requiem—which became one of the best games of the year, but its story isn’t over yet and will continue in a DLC set to release a little later. What’s more, a new film adaptation is coming out this September, which will be very different from anything we’ve seen before.

As we know, Zack Cregger (Weapons) will direct the next Resident Evil movie, and this film will not have any relation to the games and won't feature some iconic characters, like Leon S. Kennedy, Ada Wong, or Chris Redfield. Instead, it will be a story about a courier who becomes caught up in the events in Raccoon City. At the end of last month, a first teaser for Resident Evil was released, and though some were excited, not all fans liked this idea.

During the latest interview with Interview Magazine, Zack Cregger addressed the criticism of his Resident Evil movie and expressed optimism about its quality, as you can check out below:

“I feel great about it. I really like the movie a lot. It’s been a wild week since the teaser came out to see the divided reaction online. There’s so many people that clearly really want the video game, meaning the characters and story from the video game, and anything different than that is really not welcomed. I didn’t realize how passionate some people were about that.”

Previously, Cregger also mentioned that he never watched any of past Resident Evil movies, as he stated, “It’s not for me.” However, that doesn’t mean its upcoming film adaptation will necessarily be bad; early test screenings of the film have received positive feedback, with critics describing it as a “horror version of Fury Road” featuring several Easter eggs and familiar monsters from the video game. What’s more, director Zack Cregger has made a name for himself with last year’s release of Weapons, which was named one of the best horror films of 2025.

Zach Cregger's Resident Evil is set to premiere on September 18. The cast of the movie includes Paul Walter Hauser, Kali Reis, Austin Abrams, Zach Cherry, and Johnno Wilson.
