Dead Space Co-Creator Glen Schofield Announces Retirement from Game Development

Glen Schofield, former Sledgehammer Games co-founder and co-creator of Dead Space, has announced his retirement from the video game industry after more than 35 years of game development. He shared the news in a video published on his LinkedIn page.

In his farewell message, Schofield reflected on his career, thanking colleagues, friends, and family who supported him throughout decades of developing games and leading studios. He said it was time to step away from day-to-day work after what he described as an "incredible career."

Schofield is best known as one of the creators of Dead Space, one of the most influential sci-fi horror franchises in gaming. He also co-founded Sledgehammer Games, where he helped establish the studio before later launching Striking Distance Studios.

His most recent project was The Callisto Protocol, released in 2022 as a spiritual successor to Dead Space. Despite strong pre-launch expectations, the survival horror game received mixed reviews, and publisher Krafton later confirmed that its commercial performance fell below expectations.

Schofield left Striking Distance Studios in 2023. He later revealed that he had pitched a concept for Dead Space 4 to Electronic Arts, but the proposal was ultimately not approved, leaving The Callisto Protocol as the final game of his career.
