Elden Ring's Rot & Sorcery Board Game Expansion Locks In a July 2027 Release — Right as Steamforged Cuts Staff and Crowdfunding
Steamforged Games has confirmed a July 2027 release for Rot & Sorcery, the next expansion for Elden Ring: The Board Game, after its Gamefound campaign closed with 4,247 backers and roughly $2.5 million raised. The expansion ships as two standalone core boxes: Machinations of the Witch, set in Liurnia around Rennala's influence, and Dominion of Rot, built around Caelid's spreading Scarlet Rot and the Starscourge encounter. Both play solo or combine with the original 2022 core set, which drew roughly 13,000 backers and £3.3 million before its first boxes actually shipped on March 31, 2025 — nearly three years after that campaign closed.
That three-year gap matters now because of what's happening at Steamforged in parallel. The studio confirmed its second round of redundancies in three years in June, cutting roughly a third of staff across creative, design, production, and QA — the same proportion it cut in 2023. The company is also scaling back new board game crowdfunding entirely to concentrate on Warmachine, the miniatures wargame line it bought from Privateer Press in 2024 and says has tripled revenue in 21 months. Rot & Sorcery is one of seven Steamforged crowdfunded projects still unfulfilled, together worth more than £15 million, though the studio says creative work on this particular expansion is largely finished.
I think the fulfillment date is the number worth watching here, not the funding total: a studio that took three years to deliver its first Elden Ring boxes is now promising a second wave in under two, while simultaneously admitting it needs fewer active crowdfunded projects to manage. I'd read Steamforged's own language — retaining "the internal resource and external capabilities needed to deliver on our commitments" — as a direct answer to backers already asking whether Rot & Sorcery slips the way the first campaign did.
Backers won't get a clearer answer until Steamforged starts posting production updates, which is typically when its past campaigns have either held their dates or slipped. A retail release for both core boxes, following the studio's pattern with the original game, would come sometime after backer fulfillment completes.
