The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt—Songs of the Past: Possible Setting Revealed

This May, CD Projekt RED confirmed various rumors that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will receive a new expansion by announcing its new DLC, Songs of the Past. Details about it still remain unknown, but it is expected to serve as a transitional bridge between the third game and The Witcher 4. Additionally, one of the developers also teased that Songs of the Past, like Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, will offer plenty of gameplay hours, along with new storylines and characters.

Perhaps the main question fans still have about Songs of the Past is its setting. There have been rumors and speculations that it might take place in Velen from the third installment or even in Zerrikania - a desert filled with dragons and where the School of the Manticore is located. However, YouTuber Neon Knight has done research and concluded that Songs of the Past’s setting could actually be Cidaris—a well-known location in the franchise’s lore, which is in the Northern Kingdoms. According to him, the sword Geralt is holding in the DLC’s art might be Melltith, an elven blade, and Cidaris was actually built on the ruins of an ancient elven city.

Previously, CD Projekt RED teased that fans should pay attention not only to the sword Geralt is holding in the abovementioned Songs of the Past art but also that the expansion's events may be related to Belleteyn Night —a spring fertility festival celebrated on the night of April 30 to May 1 within the franchise’s lore. On this day, villagers dance around bonfires, and more importantly, they believe that the boundary between worlds disappears. It's also important to note that Belleteyn Night is linked to elven traditions, which means the Neon Knight theory definitely does have its place.

The release date for Songs of the Past, an expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, is currently unknown. CD Projekt RED’s recent financial report confirmed that around 200 developers are working on the expansion —approximately the same number who developed the original third title. Songs of the Past will release on PC, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2.
