God of War Laufey Director Hints Fate Might Receive Another Franchise Title in the Future

At the State of Play event earlier this month, Santa Monica Studio officially confirmed a new installment of God of War, starring not Kratos but Faye. It was confirmed that the story of God of War: Laufey runs parallel to the previous two games—the original 2018 title and its sequel, Ragnarok—but Faye’s story could potentially be developed further in future entries of the series.

At least, that's what God of War's game director, Laufey, Ariel Lawrence, hopes for. In a recent interview with GamesRadar+, she expressed that Faye has tremendous potential and personally would love to see the character featured in more games as the main protagonist. You can check out the highlights from her interview below:

“I think that's definitely the kind of long-term potential for a franchise that has killed as many gods as we have, being able to see what happens in a place where those folks could come together.

But we also want to make sure that the people that you're running into, that all in the story. I'm not going to make promises about how many of those people we may or may not come in contact with, but yes, I think as a possibility… absolutely.”

Continuing on the topic, she also stated that God of War: Laufey serves as a kind of bridge between the earlier installments of God of War and the series reboot that was released in 2018. This connection involves not only the return of certain combat mechanics but also the potential development of the franchise's lore.

“I mean, I definitely cut my teeth on the first God of War. Juggling enemies, chaining combos, and having dynamic movement options was always something that I love doing. But God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok's are more kind of grounded, visceral, just really up-close combat. I like both of those things, so it's really one of those, 'Can I have chocolate and peanut butter together, right?'"

What does it look like for those things to come together, and who can do that the best for us? And, you know, offer that agility, that flexibility, but still, you know, stand toe to toe with who we need to?"

It was recently revealed that God of War Laufey became the most popular game during the first week of summer, coinciding with presentations like State of Play, Summer Game Fest, Xbox Games Showcase, and Nintendo Direct, securing the top spot. Following closely was the remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, while third place went to Capcom’s Resident Evil Veronica.

The exact release date of God of War: Laufey remains unknown, but NateTheHate has confirmed that the launch is tentatively scheduled for the first half of 2027, as previously indicated by other insiders.
