Streets of Rage Movie Adaptation Gets Exciting Update—It Has Found Director and Scriptwriter
The year 2026 is set to be special for fans of fighting video games. An adaptation of Mortal Kombat has already been released—the second installment—which, despite being a financial disappointment for Warner Bros., has drawn attention. Additionally, the Street Fighter universe film is scheduled to premiere in October. Now, news has emerged that the long-troubled adaptation of a fighting game appears to finally be moving forward.
Variety has published a new report revealing that the film adaptation of Streets of Rage, a side-scrolling beat 'em up game, which was first confirmed back in 2022, has received significant updates. Notably, the movie now has a director: Jeymes Samuel, known for projects like The Harder They Fall and The Book of Clarence. Additionally, the screenplay for Streets of Rage will be written by the duo Pat Casey and Josh Miller, who previously penned the script for the Sonic the Hedgehog adaptation.
The film's cast and plot details are being kept under wraps for now, but according to an early synopsis, the Streets of Rage movie is described as being "heavily inspired by the cult classic game known for its iconic characters, acclaimed electronic soundtracks, and beat ‘em up action." The original game’s story followed three former police officers—Axel Stone, Blaze Fielding, and Adam Hunter—who join forces to take down a crime syndicate led by Mr. X.
