Albatross Interactive Announced Terminal War – Spiritual Success of a Cancelled The Last of Us Online

After the cancellation of live-service game set in The Last of Us universe and titled Fractions, some fans and developers as well were upset considering the game was almost ready. However, Naughty Dog has decided to focus their attention on single-player titles and in addition, the decision to develop and maintain live-service games would require enormous resources.

We recently knew from The Last of Us Online director, Vinit Agarwal, that it was “the best multiplayer game” he and his colleagues has ever played, and Naughty Dog decided to cancel the project just 24 hours before the official reveal. After a few years, the fans are desperately trying to believe that the game will ever be released, and have even launched a petition addressed to Naughty Dog, but at the same time NY’s indie developer – Albatross Interactive – announced their look and seemingly the spiritual successor of The Last of Us Factions, Terminal War, as they posted on X social media:

“They cancelled The Last of Us Factions 2.

So we're building it our version. We're indie & entirely self funded.

4v4. Limited ammo. Brutal executions.

This is Terminal War. Unofficial gameplay teaser.”

As can be seen from the description, Terminal War is the co-op tactical 4v4 shooter focused on realistic gameplay. It is set in a fractured America during the late 1990s and preparing for its launch in Steam via early access. The developers are making stakes on brutal melee combat, resource tension, but let the players decide – use stealth or aggressive style. Terminal War will feature three factions:

  • The Federal Faction (F.MF.) – powerful, aggressive & unified.
  • The Free States Faction (L.S.U.C.) – an alliance of states fighting for their independence.
  • The Rebellion Faction (The Banshees) – grassroots militias rising from local strongholds.

As players have noted, the animation, graphics and combat look quite convincing even from the first few frames, and it will be interesting to see whether the game will eventually be able to replace Naughty Dog’s canceled The Last of Us Online.
