New Pirate Survival, Windrose, Earned the Studio $30 Million in 10 Days

With high-profile games like Pragmata, Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred, and Mouse: P.I. For Hire releasing this month, Windrose—a new pirate-themed survival game from the little-known studio Kraken Express—could easily have gotten lost in the shuffle and failed to attract players’ attention. But the opposite turned out to be true.

After the game launched on Steam Early Access on April 14, the developers announced less than a week later that a million copies had been sold —a significant achievement for a game of this scale. For many, this came as no surprise, given that the game had been added to wishlists over 1.5 million times last month, and many people were indeed eagerly awaiting its release.

Moreover, according to a new study conducted by Alinea Analytics, Windrose generated $30 million in revenue for the developers at Kraken Express over a 10-day period and attracted more than 1.3 million players during that time. These results surpass those of other games in the same genre, including Dune: Awakening, RuneScape: Dragonwilds, StarRupture, and Grounded 2. Currently, the game has an 85% positive rating on Steam, with a peak concurrent player count of 222,134.

Just like in any pirate simulator, Windrose lets you command a real pirate ship, and below you can check out:
