Ubisoft Shuts Down Red Storm Entertainment, Developers of Tom Clancy’s Video Games
Layoffs and closure of gaming studios have become something of a frequent occurrence nowadays. More and more companies are forced to cut the number of their employees, like recently Crystal Dynamics (Tomb Raider game series) and Build a Rocket Boy (Mindseye) did for a consecutive time. Ubisoft, one of the most popular gaming studios, is not an exception, as the studio is facing another round of crisis.
According to GamesIndustry.biz, with reference to Ubisoft’s internal source, the studio has decided to close Red Storm Entertainment, with 105 employees having lost their jobs. But there is a catch: Red Storm will continue to exist but is set to have a supportive role, not involved in the development of future titles. Instead, Red Storm will focus on “the Snowdrop engine, along with IT and customer relations.”
Red Storm Entertainment is mostly known for developing multiple Tom Clancy’s video games, including Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon 2 and the Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter duology, and a lot of titles were developed in co-partnership with other Ubisoft departments. The studio also made several VR projects—Star Trek: Bridge Crew, Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR, and an untitled Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell VR game for Oculus Quest. Unfortunately, the last game from the list was cancelled in 2022 —just like Red Storm’s Tom Clancy’s The Division Heartland in May 2024. It was a third-person, free-to-play, standalone spin-off set in the universe of Tom Clancy’s The Division.
It’s not the first time Ubisoft laid off in 2026: earlier this year, the company fired 55 employees from Ubisoft Stockholm and Massive Entertainment. Also, Ubisoft Toronto, which is still developing Splinter Cell Remake, has lost 40 of its workers. Moreover, some notable Assassin’s Creed developers, Luc Couture and Jeffrey Yohalem, have decided to leave the company, but the future still looks bright for the game series as the new team of developers is helming the franchise in the right way … hopefully.
