Transform Into the Butcher and Try the Paladin Free in Diablo 4's Season of Slaughter

For the first time in the franchise's history, Diablo 4 players will be able to transform into the Butcher. The feature headlines Season 12, called the Season of Slaughter, which launches March 11. Players trigger the transformation by activating Shrines of Slaughter in Helltides, competing in the Ceremony of Slaughter in the Fields of Hatred, or entering locations called Slaughterhouses.

The Butcher originated in Diablo 1 as a difficulty spike built to catch players off guard — a fast, cleaver-swinging enemy that tore out of a room without warning and killed many characters before they had time to react. The character made a surprise return in Diablo 4 as a mid-dungeon ambush encounter, carrying the same speed and lethality that made it notorious in the original game. Now, for the first time, players take that role themselves. I think this is the kind of callback that works precisely because it's mechanical rather than cosmetic — you're not wearing a costume, you're operating as the thing that killed you.

On the same date, Blizzard opens a free trial of the Paladin class to all players on Battle.net, PlayStation, and Xbox. The trial runs from March 11 to March 18 and includes access to the base Diablo 4 game. Players can level the Paladin to 25, and any progress carries over if they subsequently pre-purchase the Lord of Hatred expansion.

Lord of Hatred launches April 28 and brings the paladin and warlock as two new playable classes, a new region, a new storyline, and raises the level cap by 10. It also adds the Horadric Cube, talismans, and charm sets. Separately, Blizzard is overhauling the skill tree for all players regardless of whether they buy the expansion and introducing loot filters as part of a broader set of quality-of-life changes.

I see the scale of what's arriving — two new classes, a reworked skill tree shipping to the entire playerbase, new endgame systems, and a seasonal mechanic that hands players control of Diablo's most recognisable enemy — as a deliberate attempt to reestablish the game rather than simply extend it. The free Paladin trial lowers the barrier to entry at exactly the moment Blizzard needs new and returning players to take notice.
