Fortnite Set to Return to Google Play Store Worldwide in 2026
After several years of legal disputes, Epic Games and Google have reached a settlement, paving the way for Fortnite to return to the Google Play Store globally in 2026.
The announcement was made by Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, who confirmed that the popular battle royale will once again be available directly through Google’s official app marketplace. At the same time, Epic plans to continue supporting the Epic Games Store on Android, providing players with an alternative platform to download the game.
A Dispute That Began in 2020
Fortnite was removed from major mobile app stores in 2020 after Epic introduced its own in-game payment system. The change bypassed standard app store commission fees, prompting both Google and Apple to remove the game from their platforms.
This decision triggered a lengthy legal battle between Epic and the tech giants over app store policies, payment systems, and developer rights.
The situation began to shift in 2025, when court rulings led to changes in how digital marketplaces operate. Later that year, in December 2025, Fortnite returned to Android devices in the United States through the Google Play Store after a five-year absence.
Following the new settlement, the game is now expected to roll out globally on Android through Google Play sometime in 2026.
Android Expands Support for Third-Party App Stores
The agreement also brings broader changes to the Android ecosystem.
Google announced that upcoming platform updates will make it easier for developers to distribute apps across billions of Android devices. A new registered app store program will simplify the installation of third-party app stores, offering a more streamlined setup process for users.
Additionally, Google is introducing an updated business model for Google Play. Developers will be able to use their own billing systems alongside Google Play Billing, while service fees are expected to be reduced.
A New Chapter for Mobile Gaming
The settlement marks a significant turning point for both developers and players on Android. Fortnite’s return signals a more flexible environment for game distribution while expanding options for how players access their favorite titles.
With the legal conflict finally approaching its conclusion, further improvements to the Android ecosystem may be on the horizon. More details about the global return date for Fortnite on Google Play are expected to be announced in the near future.
