MSI MPG 272QRF X36 Sets A New Standard For Gaming Monitors

The MSI MPG 272QRF X36 is a new gaming monitor that might set a new benchmark for variable refresh rate technology. This is a 1440p monitor with a 360Hz refresh rate and HDR support, priced at $649. It introduces G-Sync Pulsar, a technology that combines a strobing backlight with the current refresh rate to reduce motion blur. I see this as a significant step forward.

The technology aims to provide a smoother image during high-refresh-rate gaming. While other monitors like the Asus ROG Strix XG27AQNGV and the AOC Agon Pro AG276QSG2 also feature this technology, the MSI MPG 272QRF X36 is one of the first to market.

According to a review by IGN, the monitor's packaging is a bit flimsy, with thin corrugated cardboard that requires careful handling. However, the stand is of high quality and easily attaches to the screen without tools. It allows for rotation in any direction, providing flexibility in setup. The ports, which include one DisplayPort 1.4a, two HDMI 2.1, three USB Type-A, and a USB Micro for firmware updates, are all located on the back and face down. The monitor itself is nearly three inches thick, with numerous vents to cool the processor required for G-Sync Pulsar. The bezels are about 0.7 inches, with a larger one at the bottom.

The back features a dragon emblem and a modest RGB light strip. A joystick on the back controls the on-screen display. A light sensor on top of the display can track ambient light and color temperature to adjust the display, though this feature can be disabled.

Out of the box, the monitor is set to an "Eco" preset, which results in a dim picture. Switching to the "Standard" preset improves the image quality significantly. I do notice a difference. The display has a peak brightness of 530 nits, exceeding its 500-nit rating. However, color performance is a weak point, with the monitor covering 100% of the sRGB gamut but only 88% of the P3 gamut, making it less suitable for design work. In games, the display performs well, offering a fast and smooth experience, especially when paired with a high-end graphics card.

While playing games like Cyberpunk 2077, the colors are vibrant enough for an immersive experience, but the difference is noticeable when compared to an OLED display. The main appeal of this monitor is the G-Sync Pulsar technology. It provides the benefits of a variable refresh rate with reduced motion blur.

This can be particularly beneficial in competitive games. One user reported improved performance in games like Black Ops 7 and the Halo Master Chief Collection, although this is not a scientific measurement. The games felt smoother, and aiming while moving seemed easier. The monitor is a compelling option for competitive gamers who have a powerful enough graphics card to take advantage of its 1440p resolution and 360Hz refresh rate.
