The announcement confirms that Hideo Kojima’s fourth mainline entry, featuring an elderly Solid Snake, will be officially playable on platforms other than the PlayStation 3 for the first time. The game originally launched in 2008 and has remained exclusive to that console for 18 years. I see that after years of waiting, Old Snake’s story will now be accessible to a much wider audience. The collection also includes the 2010 title MGS: Peace Walker, which first appeared on the PSP before receiving ports to the PS3 and Xbox 360.

The path to this reveal began after the launch of the first volume in October 2023. A subsequent leak suggested that more re-releases were in development, which IGN later confirmed. Konami itself remained mostly quiet on the subject until August 2024, when the publisher issued a statement telling fans to “stay tuned” for more information.

The company used the February 2026 State of Play presentation to officially pull back the curtain and formally announce Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2. Alongside the main titles, the package includes the 2000 Game Boy Color entry Metal Gear: Ghost Babel and a digital soundtrack. Konami also took the opportunity to address feedback on the first collection, releasing a final update for the Master Collection versions of MGS1 and MGS3 that adds high-resolution options for crisper visuals and text.

Konami’s official website confirmed that the new release of MGS4 will not include its original multiplayer component, Metal Gear Online. That bundled experience launched with the game in June 2008 and featured several game modes, including one where a player could control Old Snake. Its servers were officially shut down in 2012.

I do believe the exclusion will be felt by long-time fans. The collection will not be entirely without an online component, however. The port of Peace Walker will support its original online multiplayer modes. This includes the classic two-to-four-player cooperative gameplay in Co-Ops, where players can complete missions together. It also brings back the more competitive Versus Ops matches for up to six players. A local wireless play option for these modes will be available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 versions of the game.

The base experience for the games will see several technical adjustments. The new version of MGS4 will feature an improved internal resolution, an increased maximum framerate, and customizable controls.

While it is not clear if Peace Walker will receive similar visual adjustments, it will also include custom control options. The bonus title, Ghost Babel, will not see the return of its two-player Vs. Battle mode. It will, however, come with added features such as screen filters, pixel-perfect screen settings, a rewind function, and its own set of custom controls.

Konami is offering incentives for players who purchase the collection early or own the previous volume. Those who pre-order will receive the Cardboard Camouflage for use in MGS4 and the Love Box uniform for Peace Walker. Players who have saved data from Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 on their system will unlock the Gold Camouflage and Gold uniform for the respective titles. For now, there is no indication that MGS5: Ground Zeroes or The Phantom Pain will be included in a future Master Collection release.
