Star Wars: Galactic Racer To Feature Extensive Customization Alongside Podracing
The announcement of Star Wars: Galactic Racer at The Game Awards 2025 created a stir. The reveal trailer showed high-speed action but seemed to omit the classic podracers from the franchise's past, causing concern among fans. A brief glimpse of Sebulba at the end of the trailer offered hope, which the game's developer has now solidified. Matt Webster, CEO and co-founder of Fuse Games, confirmed the return of the iconic racing style. The game itself takes place after the fall of the Empire, decades after the prime of podracing as seen in the prequel trilogy films.
You can’t really make a Star Wars racing experience and not have podracing, can you? The core fantasy of the game is becoming an elite racing pilot in the Galactic League, and podracing is a pinnacle of speed and racing in the Star Wars galaxy.
— Matt Webster
The development team at Fuse Games expressed a desire to expand beyond a single racing format. In a conversation with GamesRadar, Webster explained the studio's intention to innovate while respecting the legacy of past Star Wars racing titles. The goal is to provide a wide range of racing experiences by incorporating different types of vehicles. This approach aims to give players the chance to pilot familiar craft alongside entirely new ones designed for the game.
We wanted to do more – to lean into multiple vehicle types and multiple expressions of speed to give players a breadth of experiences. Galactic Racer offers players the ability to pilot vehicles they know and love, alongside ones they won’t have experienced before, across a range of solo and multiplayer modes.
— Matt Webster
The game's design philosophy blends accessibility with complexity. Webster described it as having a "pick up and play" feel reminiscent of the Burnout series, but with "real depth across all the systems." This depth includes a progression system tied to mastery and replayability. Players will have the ability to get under the hood of their vehicles. The customization options will allow for changes to both the cosmetic appearance and the performance characteristics of a craft. Webster noted that in the lawless Outer Rim, how a racer shows up on the track can be as important as their skill. The game is scheduled for a 2026 release on PC, with players anticipating the appearance of Star Wars: Galactic Racer on Steam, as well as on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
The primary camera view is third-person, an element Webster said receives an "enormous amount of effort" to perfect the game's feel. Other camera options will be available to suit different playstyles. Some perspectives will bring the camera closer to the vehicle to enhance the sense of speed and provide the situational awareness needed for close racing. A first-person pilot view will also be included to offer a more immersive, cinematic experience. Details on game modes include a unique runs-based "story-driven campaign" and standard player-versus-player multiplayer, with mentions of several other solo and multiplayer offerings.
