Jens Bergensten, lead designer at Mojang, shared his initial impressions of Hytale in a post on Bluesky. He described the game as "very polished" but noted he would "like it to be more different," concluding that in its present state, he would "just rather play Minecraft."

Simon Collins-Laflamme, CEO of Hytale developer Hypixel Studios, responded on X with a candid acknowledgment of the feedback. He accepted the critique, calling the comment on the game's polish "the best compliment we could ever get." A veteran of the Minecraft modding scene himself, Collins-Laflamme expressed his respect for Mojang's work and agreed with Bergensten's current preference for the more feature-complete Minecraft.

I understand Jens' sentiment when he says, 'I'd rather just play Minecraft.' At this point, he is probably right to feel this way. We haven't had time to add all the features that make us unique, and the early-game experience we have is quite barebones compared to what we can do with World Gen V2 and other upcoming features.

— Simon Collins-Laflamme

Hypixel's roadmap for Hytale's early access is ambitious. The studio intends to carve out a distinct identity for the game by emphasizing a combat-adventure and fantasy-based experience. The development plan includes improved and expanded world generation, a dedicated adventure mode featuring RPG mechanics, and a suite of extensive modding tools.

Collins-Laflamme stated the goal is not to compete with Minecraft but to create a new kind of sandbox experience for players seeking something different. He promised a "major shift" between the two games as these fantasy-focused features are developed and expanded. The coming months and years will show whether Hytale can deliver on this promise and establish its own unique space in the genre.

The voxel-based RPG, set in a procedurally generated fantasy world, was developed by members of the Hypixel server team with funding from Riot Games. After a brief cancellation in 2025, the game was revived and released on January 13, 2026, targeting Minecraft players who are looking for a more robust fantasy and adventure-focused experience.
