Tomb Raider: Catalyst Will Take Place After the Events of Tomb Raider: Underworld

Not just one, but two new Lara Croft games were unveiled during The Game Awards 2025 show. It’s the remake of Tomb Raider (1996) called Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantic and the new adventures of iconic character, Tomb Raider: Catalyst. Both projects are being developed by Crystal Dynamics studio.

And if it’s all clear with Legacy of Atlantic, Tomb Raider: Catalyst has some questions for the fans. It wasn’t clear whether the game a continuation of Shadow of the Tomb Raider or it’s the start of a new trilogy or game series. And we finally know the answer – and it’ a quite unexpected.

During the interview with GamesRadar, Game Director at Crystal Dynamics, Will Kerslake, revealed Tomb Raider: Catalyst is actually a continuation of Tomb Raider: Underworld, the game released back in 2008. It’s a bit surprising reveal considering not all players familiar with this Lara Croft game, but game director clarifies players don’t need to replay Tomb Raider: Underworld to understand the story of Tomb Raider: Catalyst.

"From a timeline perspective, Tomb Raider: Catalyst is set years after the events of Tomb Raider: Underworld. With the reboot trilogy serving as her origin story, so we're seeing a more experienced Lara Croft. What's important to know is that this is a new chapter in Tomb Raider. So, whether you followed Lara from the start, or this is your first Tomb Raider game, Tomb Raider: Catalyst is designed to stand on its own as an adventure that can be enjoyed by everyone."

As was revealed in the trailer, Tomb Raider: Catalyst will take place in northern part of India. The game will release in somewhere 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S/
