Dark Souls 2 Lighting Overhaul Brings Real RTGI Support And A Sharp Visual Shift
Dark Souls 2 is heading toward one of the most significant visual upgrades the game has received in years, as the creator of the well-known DS2LightingEngine Mod works on adding real-time RTGI support. The addition marks a technical shift for a game long defined by its uneven lighting and the visual compromises that shaped its launch era. The target upgrade is substantial, and the early material shared by the mod’s creator shows how far the project has advanced.
The modder, Ganaboy, released early screenshots to illustrate the step forward. The comparison set places the original lighting on one side and the work-in-progress RTGI on the other. The contrast is stark. The default version washes out surfaces and settles into flat shadows, while the RTGI test renders deeper space, heavier presence, and clearer directional light. The result pushes the ten-year-old art toward something closer to modern expectations, without bending its identity.
Ganaboy stressed that the upcoming update brings authentic Ray Tracing Global Illumination rather than a post-process workaround. Until now, most attempts to modernize the game’s lighting relied on reshade presets. Those methods could shift tone or create a stylized glow, but they never reached the level of dynamic interaction that RTGI offers. The early shots make the difference evident, particularly in areas where geometry density once exposed the engine’s limits.

Ganaboy confirmed progress but avoided any indication of when the new version might be ready for public use. The DS2LightingEngine Mod has become a fixture of the community’s broader effort to refine the game, and the coming upgrade will likely draw attention from players who revisit the series through modding.
The modding scene around Dark Souls 2 remains active beyond lighting work. The First Sin InfiniDetail mod aims to cut texture LOD pop-in and extend draw distance across the map.
