Konami and Cygames Finally Reconcile: Two-Year Patent Battle Over Umamusume: Pretty Derby Ends in Settlement
After nearly two years of legal wrangling, Konami Digital Entertainment and Cygames, the studio behind Umamusume: Pretty Derby, have finally reached a settlement. The resolution was officially announced on November 7, 2025, by CyberAgent, Cygames’ parent company.
Dispute Overview
The conflict began in 2023 when Konami sued Cygames, accusing the developer of infringing on several of its patents connected to Umamusume’s core gameplay systems. Konami sought over $26 million in damages and even attempted to suspend the game’s operations entirely.
Although neither side disclosed the specific mechanics at the heart of the case, many industry observers pointed to Umamusume’s signature “training” system — a feature that lets players develop horse-girl athletes — as being reminiscent of gameplay elements found in classic Konami series such as Power Pros and Tokimeki Memorial.
Settlement and Aftermath
Throughout the proceedings, Cygames consistently maintained that no infringement occurred, filing invalidation trials against all 18 patents involved in the lawsuit. However, to avoid further delays and ensure the continued enjoyment of Umamusume: Pretty Derby by its player base, the company ultimately agreed to settle.
Both parties have confirmed that the full terms of the agreement — including the specific patents and settlement conditions — will remain confidential.
In the end, the long-running dispute has been put to rest, allowing Cygames to focus on its hit title’s future without the shadow of legal uncertainty.
